Performance Wheels for the budget minded

Can anyone refer me to a good lightweight performance wheelset that is affordable? Running stock 17x7 with 205/45/17 and plan on reusing the tires since they are relatively new. Budget is under $600. Goal is to get the best set for the buck. No ugly elaborate looking wheels though! My only exception! Looking at either enkei , konic, oz or whatever is comparable.

I'm guessing if you have 17x7 on a 1st gen it's probably the S-Lites which are 25lbs a piece, so pretty much ANY wheel you buy in 17" size will give you better performance.

If they have to be new, $600 is limiting you a little. ALso remember to include mounting and balancing which will probably run you $50. Here's a few from Tire Rack:

$137 ea and 17lbs: http://www.tirerack.com/wheels/Wheel...ll&sort=Weight

$143 each and 18lbs (available in several colors): http://www.tirerack.com/wheels/Wheel...ll&sort=Weight

Check out the Rota RB..... They weigh 18.2 pounds in 17x7.5 and come in several nice looking colors. I paid $600 for a set shipped.

Yeh I didn't say I needed to go brand new. A friend of mind has some old Team Dynamics for sale for $450 and they are all with tires and even has a spare.

Rotas are not much of a performance wheel from what I've heard. Need something that can handle abuse.

Well I would say start browsing used wheels at places like these forums, Honda-Tech, Craigslist, etc, etc.

What exactly do you mean by "abuse?" I know guys that have been running Rota wheels at the track for years with no issues. I also know guys who have bent Volks on the street by hitting potholes with low profile tires.

Check out tirerack.com.....there are lots of wheels that will fit the MINI's for around $100-$125 that look pretty nice, and are much lighter than the S-lites.

Been there haha. I know where I can look for wheels. My question is what do you track and autox guys recommend. For a lighter weight wheel that looks good and is quality but isn't a wallet buster.

Track/autox and those rough Northern California roads.

I’m of the opinion that if I was looking for performance I’d go from my S-Lites to a base R50 wheel and meaty performance tires.

Anything in the Enkei racing lineup is just about the best you will get as far strength and low weight for the price. New, they'll be over your budget (around 1k or so) but I'm sure you could do a lot better used. Check out the rpf1 and pf01. They're super popular in the honda community. I'm sure you could find a used set on honda tech like Jason mentioned pretty easily.

Nice looking, sure. But those things are 24lbs, so they are far from the lightweight wheel he is looking for.
