What's this piece? First time mini buy

Howdy all!

I'm looking to buy my first mini cooper off craigslist, but previous owner said this came out of the tranny:

https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...1&d=1382588627

Any idea what it came off of?

Here is what he said about it:

The dealer basically told me there was some sort of internal failure. There wasn't any fluid in the trans and they said metal pieces we coming out. They gave me a piece that was about an inch big. They said they would have to do a tear down to find out what the exact problem would be which naturally would cost a lot to find out I need a new trans anyway.

The reason I took it in in the first place was I spotted a lot of oil on the ground in the parking lot after my sons soccer practice. I checked all the fluids under the hood and they all looked normal. So I drove it home. I kept checking the oils and they seemed fine. I drove it to work the next day and the day after that and then it sat for the weekend. I then brought it to them on a Tuesday because it was a lot of oil but I couldn't tell where it was coming from. That's when they told me that. It didn't drive any different after spotting the oil. Clutch feels the same as it always has too. Very strange.
So, I would be able to drive it. It's just this random piece and oil leak. It is a 2004 Cooper S with a six speed manual and supercharger if that means anything. What do you guys think?

GreekDrifter91 Oct 23, 2013 10:38 PM

hard to tell what it is but if i throw a guess out there... maybe its part of the shift forks? but they dont rebuild transmissions anyway they just put new ones in.... ask how i know lol. and they dont see any holes in the case maybe oil leaked from the axles, or maybe the case didnt seal well and it leaked at the seam. but he said the clutch feels the same then its not coming from the input shaft seal or even a whole blown in the bell housing(which has happened to me in another car).

dont know if he would put in a new trans id get it but its expensive unless you do the work your self and find a cheap trans, i found a used 6spd on craigs list for 500 with 55k miles on it supposedly. i ripped it open and everything look good so i pit it back together and tosses it into the car.

I don't know enough about these things to make a guess, but otherwise summed up my understanding there GreekDrifter. (Dealers stink, find cheap trans, this is a strange case)

My largest concern was that I had planned to spend about $4000 on a new vehicle. Guy is asking $3900 and a whole new tranny would put me over.

I've been trying to find pictures from other's rebuilding their transmissions themselves. This is from the 5 speed, but it's the closest I've come to figuring out what exploded in this six speed.
https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...1&d=1382594179

Part 632 is the one I'm suspecting. Curved metal piece with mount holes. I'm still searching for an exploded view of the manual 6.

My plan thus far is, check it out in person and with research the cost of the broken bits. Then, if I can justify cost, piece together my own 'rebuild' kit - common seals/gaskets that leak, a limited slip diff and whatever is broke inside this tranny. Leave it in the garage until I have time and then tear the whole front end apart and fix it all.

GreekDrifter91 Oct 24, 2013 08:27 AM

you will not find a exploded view of the 6 speed getrag, because nobody rebuilds them and nobody supplies parts for them. the only parts you can get would be input and output shaft seals and the bearings that the diff rides on. other wise there is nothing out there excpet used and new transmissions.

i have been down this path before and have thoroughly explored all avenues the only thing i ever came across was a ebay page from england the sells used internal for a hefty price. and that the ford focus SVT uses the same trans but that didnt help either. your best bet would be to look on craigs list, ebay, or one of our venders on this site to see if they have any used low mile trans available.

What I'm finding on other sites and here is only confirming you GreekDrifter. (I was really hoping this wouldn't be the case) I just can't believe that it's working fine without that little metal piece and I can't find others that have failures with this tranny. It's videos like this that make me think I can do it myself:

You've been awesome GreekDrifter, think it's worth it?

I guess my other post is pending approval, but I also found this on Fleabay:

+1 on what greek drifter said , For the 6 speed getrag manual transmission other then outside seals, fluid, and some other small parts. As far as internals they just replace the whole transmission.

One of the only transmissions you can get internals and such, is the manual 5 speed Midlands for MINI Cooper (non-S) up to 7/2004 , then they went to the 5 speed getrag.

To find the 6 speed Getrag and the 5 speed midlands to share the same exact part would be trial and error.

Thanks

So, guess who is the proud new owner of a Mini ;)

https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...1&d=1382936496

The great news is, we put fluid in the trans and this thing has so much go! Coming from my 1987 4.0L Jeep Cherokee, I cannot believe a vehicle could be so fast and quiet!

More importantly now, need to find a trans

I paid $3200 for this mini by the way, figure if I get the trans for under $2000 and it's a decent deal for a 2004 Cooper S

ECSTuning Oct 29, 2013 12:10 PM

If you need a new factory MINI factory rebuilt transmission let us know. There is one pre 7/2004 and one post 7/2004. Whats you production date?

Fir3Chi3f Nov 4, 2013 01:21 PM

I see those transmissions are over $3000, which a bit out of my price scope, but if I end up going with ECSTUning would the production date be on the transmission? Or are we talking about the vehicle as a whole?

Being a 2004, it seems to be a matter of the manufacturing date being before or after July. The car is still sitting at a friend's place until I finish some school stuff.

ECSTuning Nov 4, 2013 01:48 PM

Its the manufacturer date of your MINI, vehicle as a whole.

Here you go , they come with the core charge included.

In 1/2005+ they have the LSD version which 23007574849 is the NON LSD version.

If you need anything else , let me know. At least you have the part numbers.

Thanks

Congrats on the NEW to you car!!

Look on the drivers-side door jamb...
There you will find tire PSI info, the VIN#, and the production date....
The MONTH/YEAR of production is pretty important when ordering MANY parts!

Fir3Chi3f Nov 4, 2013 10:37 PM

Production date is February 2004, awesome, thanks for the location Zippy and thanks for the clarification ECS!

I'll keep you guys posted if you care to know what goes on with this thing. If nothing else, I will definitely post my findings of the old tranny. :)
