A couple of points - this isn't a recall. MINI has just extended the warranty on older automobiles for this particular part. If your pump is working, MINI doesn't have to replace it, preemptively. I checked with parts guys at my nearest MINI dealership and they said they don't have any of the power steering pump kits in to replace anyone's even if they're actually broken.
It's been six weeks now since I sent in my paperwork. No acknowledgement, no check.
This reads like a "How not to" article on customer service. My worry is that ultimately, this affects the resale value of the vehicle and if I were in the marketplace for a new car, I might think twice about purchasing this marque.

Sorry to burst your bubble but that is the truth. Read the whole thread and you'll see that many have been put on back order due to this new extended warranty program on them.

I must've missed those posts.. mainly seemed to be people waiting on checks, not pumps.

I have my 2002 S since new not with 134000 miles.
I've had the pump done at least 3 times, maybe 4.
I usually keep all my service documents and had the last two from my current dealership. We turned in $1500 in receipts and only got $525 back.
The other dealership will not call me back to get me the record on the third one.
I have no idea what rules they apply and I will try to follow up on this.

Does anyone know if the pump has been redesigned?
My 2002 MCS had the pump replaced in 2006 with a reman. I've noticed MINI still lists pumps as reman for $600 and change.
Have any parts been revised in the reman pumps?
How many revisions have there been if any?
I'm half tempted to head fake the dealer and just say the steering assist cuts out. I know some might give me the stink eye for this, but it might be worth it just to prevent my car from catching fire.
My PS cooling fan was recently changed.

Meanwhile, I sent my documents in right away as well but here it is August 10 and no acknowledgement or check. I'll give them a bit more time as an earlier poster apparently has received a check already.

Would you like to tell us how much you paid and what you got back?

Must be some new movement on this issue as I just spoke to a rep at customer relations, and they said they're now reimbursing for the labor costs in addition to the parts if you had the work done at an independent shop. Told me to make sure i indicate that I wanted a parts and labor reimbursement on the cover letter i include with the invoice copies sent in.

10 weeks and counting. When I remember my service advisor at the dealership told me to send in my own paperwork (rather than have the dealership do it) because I'd see my money faster, I have to scratch my head. At least I am not waiting for the parts to show up at the dealership. That's my best attempt at being a glass half-full guy today!

Mailed in on 5-28-2013
Called on 7-12-2013 “Received in the system on 7-8-2013. Has not been processed”
Called on 8-22-2013 “It is in the system, but due to a very large response, it is taking longer than expected to process”
I’m not surprised that it is taking a long time for MINI to pay what I estimate to be about 100,000 people with this same issue about $1,100 each.

I glad I remember reading this thread when it first started. I was having a nice drive in my '02 R53 today, enjoying the twisties, when my power steering just disappeared after a hairpin turn. One minute it's working, the next it's gone. Got it back home, checked the fuses, they are all good. I'm about 300 miles short of the 100K mark, so I'm figuring it's a classic pump failure. I'm the third owner of the car. What's going to be the best way for me to get things fixed? Should I let a dealership do it?

I just lost mine this morning. My 2004 R53 has 105,000 on it. The power steering was acting fine, no loud or unusual sounds and also very smooth operation. I was turning into a side street and it just stopped working. I'm now driving without power steering. I needed a new upper body workout!
I called Mini of Peabody and am waiting to hear back regarding a repair. I'm told there is a shortage of new components due to the extended warranty.
At least I can still drive it.

Well, mine turned out to need a simple fix; the power steering reservoir was almost dry. I hadn't actually checked it since the engine swap myself, since I figured that the shop had filled it; I've only put about 800 miles on it since then. I'm wondering if they filled the reservoir but didn't prime the system, and me driving it around pulled the reservoir dry when it primed. I'm also not sure if they used Pentosin CHF 11S. I'll be keeping an eye on things to make sure I'm not losing fluid. I was kinda disappointed, I figure the pump will fail eventually and I was hoping it had while it's still under warranty.

You've got the picture. If you live a good life, garage your car, change the oil often and don't let it hang out in mall parking lots, you may never need to have your power steering pump replaced.
But if any of the above fails and you have to have it replaced, don't count on Mini taking care of it as many of the people who have posted to this are still waiting for their checks "in the mail..."
