I'm at 100k and the dealer wants $230 for plugs?
$230 seems kind of steep, and then once they add in all the bogus misc. fees and tax will be more like $300.
How complicated can replacing them be?? Any reason I can't walk-in to O'Reilly Automotive, tell them I've got a 2006 Mini and get plugs from them? Would the gap be correct over the counter, or do plugs still require to have the gap adjusted like it was still 1946? Thanks for any advice. |
Screw that. Go get NGK 4285's these are the JCW 4 prong no gapping needed. Change them yourself.
|
Plugs are about $50 plus the dealer charges about $130+per hour labor....
If you DIY them, USE A TOURQUE Wrench!! Many have been spit out!! Iridium Plugs or the OEM multi-prong does not/cannot be adjusted. |
The OP does not have a pulley....so the OEM plug will be fine!!
|
Zippy I saw JCW in his sig. So you are correct if he does not have a pulley. My bad

Hyper Blue Silver Roof 2006 MC |
heck...looked again...just a Cooper!! |
These Mini dealers are nuts! Saw an ad for a local dealer that wanted $300 to rotate, balance, inspect tires and do an alignment! Change the plugs yourself. $50 for plugs $30 for a decent torque wrench. Make sure the engine is cold when you change them though.

2006 MINI COOPER 1.6 L4 W10B16A FI Spark Plug Part No. Stock No. Plug Gap Photo Standard BKR6EKUB 7969 .032 V-Power BKR6E 6962 .032 G-Power BKR6EGP 7092 .032 Laser Platinum BKR6EQUP * 3199 .032 Iridium IX BKR6EIX 6418 .032 **plugs for an S or JCW S (or a S with a pulley are different)** *****Note, the NGK is the OEM plug maker for the MINI***** The stock plug is a multi prong like this http://www.ngksparkplugs.com/images/tip/NGK3199-2.jpg many folks do go to this style..an Iridium plug http://www.ngksparkplugs.com/images/tip/NGK5688-2.jpg Neither gets gapped |
And like we said before, USE A TOURQUE WRENCH!!
Even a cheap Harbor freight one. Many MINI's have had plugs spit out, needing a helicoil to fix the threads. The aluminum in the head is not very forgiving!! |
And replace them when the engine is COLD.
|
what's the torque spec for the spark plugs, thanks

These horror stories helped me decide to split the difference... I ordered a torque wrench but it didn't arrive in time (Needed the plugs changed before a road trip.) I bought the plugs for $40 (NGK iridiums) and the dealer was happy to install them for $70. |
Must ask , (Tried searching didn't find answer) -
BKR6EQUP spark plugs , for the R50 , how many miles can go before being replaced? Thanks! |
