Like a lot of folks here I wasn't too hot on all the chrome. But I also liked the contrast it provided. So I didn't want to black everything out. I decided to try clear plasti dip.

First I did black out the beltline, then I wrapped the grille slats with black vinyl. Then I used clear plasti dip on all the other chrome bits. Mirror caps, gas cap, door handles, headlight rings, grille surround, and the badges. Since its clear but matte, it gives it almost a brushed aluminum look.

Has anyone else done this? I would love to see other pictures. What do you think?

Oooooohhhh i like!

Nice, that looks great! Much better than total blackout IMO. At least on gray/silver.

Very nice, good idea for someone w/ grey, silver, black, blue or white, esp. if you have a match painted aero kit.

Are you a fan of dipyourcar.com? They have a good forum. You should post pics there.

That's where I ordered the plasti dip. That's a good idea. I'll post it over there too.

Fantastic job. Much better than this tacky complete blackout trend.

Here's a shot of the back. Boot handle and badges done.

My only issue is that matte pieces(whether black or silver/chrome) cheapens the look. I had blacked out my CTS wagon last year and wanted matte black. They had another CTS sedan there that did it matte and owner wanted it redone in glossy black after a week. I decided to use the body shop's advice and go glossy black(and never regretted it). Unless it's a complete full body matte job done well(like the Porsches and M6s), matte really looks cheap. And I'm not a fan of the matte black outs done with Plasti dip either(except when they're main body black and that gives it a nice contrast)

I really like this look. I think I will give it a try on some chrome.

JDPaddle Mar 8, 2013 03:55 PM

but the matte grey/ silver does look nice against his particular exterior. I say nice job in this case.

Not sure what I think of soome of the extensive black outs. I like the theory. Would need to see it in person. Color combos mean everything though. Gonna work on some. Others, not so much.

Me, I'm Pepper White with Chrome. Looks good on some pieces... I have toyed with the idea of black headlight housings. But it quickly turns to then what...? and I don't have any clear answers.

I like it! Might not work as well on other color combos as others stated.

I have blacked out trim on my chili red, and it's not ideal but still better than the chrome and white that I covered up.

Nice!! I like what you did with the clear plasti dip! I just had my rims plasti dipped black and it looks pretty good with the blue. haha i also live in Utah! Check out the pics here http://instagram.com/diycustoms/

I'd go brushed over chrome anytime. Vinyled my headlight rings light silver instead of color coding for a bit of contrast w/ DS long ago & it has remained that way. Great Job!!!!
