Is this rediculous or what. When I had my last one replaced it cost $638.00. Went up $100.00 from August. Labor was $80.00 per hour and parts had also went up. I just about died. Century Mini/BMW will not accept payment from the insurance company so I had to fork it over and wait to get reimbursed from the insurance company. Is this not an outragous price for a windshield or am I crazy. I will never own another BMW car. To darn expensive to work on. After warrenty is up this Mini is BYE! BYE! :mad: :cry:

Try safelite (www.safelite.com) or 89glass (www.89glass.com).

Both companies will actually come to your house or place of business and replace the windshield on the spot, in about 30 minutes, for less than HALF of what the dealer charges. Just make sure the repairperson they send has some MINI repair experience -- it is a bit different than a "normal car" because they must know how to remove the A-pillar molding without breaking the plastic clips underneath. But we're talking like $300 or so...installed!

Good luck,

-Joe

I replaced my OEM MINI windshield with the aftermarket PPG glass. It seems to be much more durable and stronger. Total cost of replacement at an independent glass shop was $236 installed.

MINI dealerships are a total rip-off for windshields unless they are covering it under warranty . . . .

Thanks for the info. Have to see if that company is in my area if I have to have another windshield. This is the second one. This is also suppose the be the" New" and "better" windshield. We will see! :smile:

As a MINI owner, a $0 deductable is your friend. :sad:

What is OEM windshield and where do they come from?

Yucca Patrol 03-29-2004 10:05 AM

OEM = Genuine MINI windshield.

It is made in HELL by the Krakzenpits Glass Company :grin:

You really want the PPG brand glass. Any auto glass shop will know PPG as it is a very common brand of auto glass.

Apparently, the PPG windshield is a little thicker and stronger than the fragile piece of fine crystal MINI sells for $700. . . .

Its definitely not the fault of St Gobain. I only know them by reputation for their work in materials. they do tons of business all over the globe. I have a feeling that MINI went with a cheaper glass initially as a cost saving measure. They probably took a minimum spec glass and thought that it would be sufficient on the whole (which it likely is). But now that they are dealing with the stress cracking and warranty cost issues due to unforseen design "characteristics" (read Flexing A pillar, even if minimal) they are using a better glass...

i dont know, im just guessing

You get what you pay for with the glass shops that come to your car and do the work in 30 minutes or so. New glass should be given 24 hours without driving or opening/shutting doors so that the adhesive sets. Specify PPG or better than OEM glass but have it done at the shop. Isn't there newer OEM glass that's supposed to be better? PM "holdenontoit". He knows the part number for the newer, and we hope, stronger OEM glass.
