R50/53 How many miles on your clutch ?
How many miles on your clutch ?
I am still looking to buy a nice 2002-06 Cooper S and I want to buy a low mile one, But there is one local which looks real nice with the Works package and I am wondering how miles you get out of your clutch so I can calculate the proper price I want to pay,
I know it depends on driving style and highway use and skill,
So with this I ask,
How many miles did you clutch last so far?
Or how many miles on it when you had to replace it?
Thank you
Peter

60+K. Clutch wear depends entirely upon the driving habits of the original owner. There are those who have complained about getting only 20 or 30 thousand miles on a clutch. I'd hate to see what else they do to abuse their motor.
As you already recognize, how long the clutch lasts depends on the driving/driver. In other threads, people have stated a few 10s of thousands of miles up to 200+ thousand miles.
I am curious how you would use such information to argue over the price? I doubt you will have a seller who is going to say "Yeah, my clutches usually last just 50K miles, so this one is near its end and your gonna have to replace it soon. Sure, I'll knock off a couple thousand off the price."
Good luck though!
(Mine is at 90K on the original clutch.)

115,000 + miles on my clutch currently. Hundreds of autocross runs on race tires with hard launches, a bunch of track days, many trips to the drag strip (with smokey burnouts and all that fun stuff), towing my trailer to and from events, most all of this with a 15% reduction pulley on the supercharger. The clutch is showing no signs of giving up anytime soon. The stock clutch is a very stout unit, I wouldn't worry too much about it.

In general it's a good idea to have your own mechanic look over a used car before you buy it. Clutch wear should definitely be on the check list.
I'm at 35K, no issues with the clutch. The MINI service department tell me it's in good condition.

136,000 on mine so far. If the car in question is being sold by the original owner (as opposed to a dealer) you might want to have him take you for a ride and see how skilled/smooth he is. Also have him downshift for you and see if he blips the throttle before shifting.
Just bought my '03 from a private seller in March. It had 98k on it. Almost 102k now. Still being new manuals myself, I have yet to figure out when the clutch is giving in (I'm sure it's not hard to feel
). The guy who owned the car before was older and seemed to take good care of it (minus the filthiness of the outside, along with all the scratches and gauges on the body lol). Don't let the mileage change your mind

Mine's an '04 with 82k - don't know if it's the original clutch. Having generally driven manuals all my life, it doesn't feel super-crisp like a new clutch feels, but it doesn't seem like it's slipping at all either. In short, I'm thinking I've got a while yet before I'll need to replace it. (Where's the "fingers-crossed" smiley...
)
As far as your question - I don't know how much you think you'd be able to knock off the price. Unless it feels like it's definitely slipping - believe me, you'd know it when you feel it - maybe you try to knock a couple hundred bucks off? It's a wear item, just like brakes and tires, so you'd have to expect it to wear out sometime. Whether that time is closer or farther away is hard to know - but it's one of the joys of being a three-pedal driver.

I've got 56,771 on my second OEM clutch. But recently I've been getting the chewbacca noise first thing in the morning, and some harsh grabbing throughout the day. Classic oil contamination of the clutch lining. I probably should have had them replace the crank seal as well instead of just the transmission input shaft seal last clutch job.
97,200 miles on the car. First clutch death was actually destroyed release bearing, original flywheel still in car. (inadvisable, I know)

As said above some die in 10k, some go 200k. Both driver and car specific issues. Even a very good drive can get a bad clutch.
Just plan for the price of a new clutch. $1,500 if you have someone do it.
'05 S, 83k. Gone through two clutches already.
Previous owner had the clutch done at 40k, and the throw-out bearing grenaded on me at 79k. Every time I think about it, I feel the sudden urge to roll my car down a cliff ... I've been driving MT since I learned to drive cars when I was 15. I never do any burnouts or hard launches, but I do autocross the car every summer.
I replaced the OE "revised" clutch and dual-mass flywheel with an Exedy OE kit and a lighter flywheel. Works great now. Much better than the OE LuK/Valeo unit in terms of drivability.

You must hold the record for most miles on the original clutch!
When you eventually replace it, you gotta frame that clutch!
