I took my 04 ( non s), 5 speed mannual with 41k to my dealer to diagnosis a very strange noise the car would make under load, in all gears, ( noise would stop when clutch is depressed or in netural ) verdict came back as the tranny was shot !!!! I called BMW and of course they won't do anything because of the age of the car regardless of the low mileage !!! Can anyone suggest a shop in the Boston/ metro area where I can get a second opinion ... the car drives and shifts fine, .... any thoughts on other options/ soultions ??

You need to research the threads on CVT problems.

Don't let it go. I can't recommend a shop in your area, but I would caution you to get your second opinion ASAP. If you catch it before it blows completely (discriminating condemnation based on Midlands poor rep), you might be a good candidate for a rebuild. Good luck.

IMO, THE shop to have mini work done in the boston area!!good prices, and tons of mini knowledge!!
The non-s 5 speed midland is known to fail pretty often...much better than the cvt, but still an issue for many...cheaper to fix/replace though!!
