R50/53 White Wheels
I have a gray mini cooper s with silver wheels and since my roof and mirrors are white from the factory, I have decided to paint my wheels white as well. I was just wondering, are the original white wheels painted glossy? semi gloss? or matt finish?? I do want to make my wheels look original. Thanks for the info! Btw, great site!!
hey have you guys noticed that the white roof isnt the same shade as the white side mirrors? my question is, are the wheels painted in the shade of the side mirror or the roof? thanks for the info. ill try that wd40 thing once i get my wheels painted.

I think that's just a matter of the different material, and the different lighting conditions between the roof and the side view mirrors... the roof is actual body metal, and the side view mirrors are just plastic caps...

I've used it on white wheels, and also to get bugs & tar off of paint. (Like the front of cars.)
WD40, I believe, has a kerosene base, which explains its cleaning effectiveness. In terms of rubber and plastic, there should be no worries there, as it's recommended for use with o-ring motorcycle chains.
I used to have a motorcycle with white wheels, and wd40 with a little paper towel would get all of the stubborn stuff off without scrubbing, and then I'd follow up with just regular soap/water. Absolutely amazing results, and it's not abrasive. Note that I was washing off any residue afterward, so I've never actually left it on for more than 15 minutes or so.
I've never had a problem with it, and in the dozens of people I know that use it cleaning their bikes/cars, I've never heard of a problem.

ps: Really, it was much easier than scrubbing the hell out of the wheels with soap, sponges, soft scrub, & everything else I've tried!

I don't know about car detailers, but Motorcycle guys have been using WD-40 to get tough stuff off for years. removes bugs, grease, gummy sticker residue, tree sap, etc supposedly without harming paint. I've never noticed it causing harm to the paint.
I also find simple greene to do absolute wonders on wheels.

I have a Mercury Villager with white wheels and had alot of brake dust to contend with, so I switched from standard disc pads to ceramic. They are a little expensive but they cut the brake dust problem that white wheels show so well.

W/O looking, my guess would be the roof... I think that the difference with the mirror caps is purely optical, and not a 'true' difference with the color... but hey, see if you can get someone local with a MINI with the white rims to go w/you to the paintshop so they can get a reading... that would be the truest reading...
