Everyone,
I just realized that I hadn't published the stories behind the pictures in the 2004 NAM Calendar of Motoring. Here they are:

Cover - BlackNBlue
Title: We Don't Need No Stinking Pavement!
Date: August 23, 2003
Story:
Taken just off Utah State 9, near Virgin, UT. I had just left Zion National Park after meeting up with two other MINI owners- a fellow SCMM member and Las Vegas area MINIac who is now forming the Sin City group.

Story:
We were on a road trip that started in Florida, where we purchased the MINI and continued on this country's great backroads to our home in Lake Tahoe, Ca.. Both pictures (see September as well) were taken in and near Avila, Missouri. We travelled on the original "Route 66" as much as possible including its original pink concrete, getting lost several times. It was a blast to drive the less travelled (quiet) roads of this country where people are not in such a rush and find the time to talk to those just passing by!

Title: GOLDEN MINI
Date: June 30, 2003
Story:
Our first 'MINI' Road Trip. After 1 month of ownership we took a 10 day road trip from Tempe, Arizona to San Francisco. My husband and I were excited to drive Highway 1 up the coast of California. Our first stop IKEA in Burbank, not the best place to stop and make purchases at the beginning of a road trip, driving a MINI Cooper = ). Up the coast saw only one other MINI. Spent two nights in Carmel Valley, went to Monterey Bay Aquarium, 17-Mile Drive (Pebble Beach), Carmel Mission and Laguna Seca Raceway. Onto San Francisco from Carmel Valley, we arrived in SF around noon June 30th. It was such a beautiful day, the sky was clear. I wanted to capture my own MINI photo near the Golden Gate Bridge, similar to the photo on the cover of 'MINI' the book. We spent 30 min. trying to find the base of the bridge and once we did I took lots of shots with my new Olympus digital camera and captured the perfect image. Had a wonderful time in San Francisco. July 4th with relatives in Bethel Island (east of San Francisco). Spent 30 minutes in Yosemite on July 5th (too many people). Spent the night in Mammoth Lakes. From Mammoth Lakes to Las Vegas, stayed at the Hard Rock Hotel, relaxed at the pool and visited relatives. It was a perfect ending to a fabulous trip in our new MINI.

Story:
The photo was taken during the drive to Seven Springs Resort with the PittStop MINI Club of Pittsburgh, PA. There were around 40 MINIs at the event. At that moment we were stopped along the road to regroup; I took the picture just before we started moving again.

Title: Priceless
Date: August 25, 2003
Story:
It was taken on a tour of Windsor Ontario. We noticed a little Chinese Restaurant called "The Mini". Definite photo op. Drove around the block and lucked out with a parking spot right out front....Priceless

Title: ZOE's on a lift!
Date: September 13, 2003
Story:
On the weekend of September 12-14, 2003, the Rainbow Owners & MINI Enthusiasts (ROME) group coordinated a long-distance rally from Philadelphia, PA to Provincetown, MA to enjoy the camaraderie of family, friends and their MINIs. A scavenger hunt was arranged to "find and photograph" unique items from the four towns on the Outer Cape (Eastham, Wellfleet, Truro and Provincetown). One of the hunt categories was "Most Creative Photograph of your MINI".

Driving through Wellfleet, I came across this "Caution - Forklifts" sign at the Mid-Cape Home Center. I pulled my MCS into the parking lot, and asked the guy if he would be so kind as to "lift" my MINI for the camera! He was psyched, had never seen a MINI before, and gladly "Motored" the forklift over to ZOE and smiled for the camera!

It was a great afternoon in a great part of the world (Cape Cod!) and ZOE was not harmed in any way during the shooting of this photograph!

Title: Ferry Ride
Date: September 13, 2003
Story:
The picture was taken on the ferry that runs between Kingston and Wolf Island Ontario on September 13, 2003. The event was MINImeet 2003. The 25 MINIs in the picture comprise over half of the 47 MINIs participating at the weekend long event. There were cars from six states and two Canadian provinces attending the meet. Kingston, Ontario is located on the border between New York and Ontario on the eastern end of Lake Ontario. We were told by the captain that normally the ferry hold 55 cars however we managed to break the record for cars on the ferry with 70 total vehicles. Saturday’s activities were held on Wolf Island. After the crossing there was a motor around the island ending with all 47 MINIs parking in the driveway of a relative of the organizer Robert Gold.

My car Smileee is the ly/b mcs with the number 66 on the side.

As a side note, there is a white Escort in with all of our cars. The Escort belongs to a local resident that refused to let all of us to be grouped together, even though she was promised a space on the ferry.

Story:
I put together an early morning Malibu photoshoot specifically to take pictures for submittal in the NAM calendar contest. This photo is the result of that photo shoot and was done on Kanan Dume Road in Malibu, California.

Title: Follow the Yellow-Brick Road
Date: August 24, 2003
Story:
Taken somewhere between Mesquite, NV & Las Vegas I purposely took an offramp to have my MINI point toward Interstate 15 (in the distance).

Both photographs were taken on a road trip covering two dozen states.
My wife is a Chicagoan, while I'm a schoolteacher here in LA County, so we visit the Windy City in the summertime. This past summer I decided to road trip it there alone in my MINI since my wife had flown there with the kids. The MINI endured everything- intense Arizona & New Mexico desert heat, severe Iowa lightning with driving rain, the thickest locust storm I had ever seen, and, of course, being driven off road! Solo traveling allowed me to stray from the Interstates just to get the photographs I wanted. I feel very fortunate in having been able to take this road trip and look forward to doing it again, with wife and kids next time!

Title: Post Meet MINIs
Date: November 16, 2002
Story:
This pic was taken after Florida's infamous "MINI Meet 2: Rally Fun." The rally ended at this park, and it started raining soon after everyone began trickling in. I had to get a picture of this, because the MCS in the foreground was one of the first, if not the first, Indi Blue MINI Cooper S's in Florida.

Title: A Late Night in a Small Town
Date: September 7, 2002 (about 2 AM)
Story:
We (my fiancé Andrea and myself) were out late at night motoring in rural Western New York, doing the things you can't do during the day due to a higher frequency of police, when we came up to the VERY small town of Franklinville, NY. The Town has these very bright sodium street lights that light up the town very nicely so I decided to set my shutter speed on my camera to 5 seconds and do some timed photography. This picture was the last picture I took as I walked back to the car. Although you can't see her, Andrea is sleeping in the passenger seat after an exciting ride.

Title: Many, MINI Sunsets
Date: December 25, 2002
Story:
I wanted a couple of dramatic shots to showcase a pretty special Christmas present from my wife and I also love the sunsets in Arizona, so I figured I'd go and shoot some "magic hour" shots all with a point and shoot digital camera. The result is an iconic picture with a silhouette that could be mistaken for a classic Porsche...which says a lot about the MINI design cues.

Thanks again to all those that shared these photos and stories with us!

Thanks, Mark, for the Motoring Stories!

They sure enhance the calendar. FYI - the deck hands on the Wolfe Island Ferry (June Centerfold, 50 MINI Ferry Ride) were thrilled with the calendars we gave them at Xmas as a thank you for their help getting us all onboard!

If your MINI wants to join us at MINImeet 2004: The Wolfe Island Rally Scavenger Hunt, you can download the MINImeet Registration Form.

Don't miss the boat. Be in next year's NAM Calendar (maybe!!)

Mark,

Next year you should include the stories with the presentation of the calendar.

Peace,

I re-read the stories every month when I flip the calendar. The NAM Calendar is a 2004 MINI highlight, IMHO!

We should all be gathering our pics for the '05 version!
