The "other" connection on Marshall's electric oil pressure gauge

Anybody have any idea what the unused "other" connection *on the sending unit* is?

Thanks!

Dutch

Just guessing it is to light it at night? No idea what you mean with such a short, vague post.

Sorry--I really need to proofread my stuff more carefully!

There's two connections on the sending unit--one used for the gauge, the other, in the instructions, it says not to use it or connect anything to it to get your gauge working.

My mind sees a connector on the sending unit and wonders why they would bother to put a connector there for *something* and then not use it, and, by extension of that thought--what the heck is that supposed to be used for?

It might be how they test the sender at the factory? I really have no clue.
Either way I wouldn't connect power to it, unless you are planing on buying another one Joe.

It could be a ground. They aren't application specific senders, you might have to connect it if it were in a plastic fitting.

Dave--
I'm pretty sure that's not it, since it says specifically says in the instructions not to hook anything to the other contact to make the gauge work, and to ground to the housing if you aren't getting a good enough ground to make it work.

Thanks!

Well, I just looked at it again.

One terminal is marked "G" for the green wire and the other is marked "WK", and is the one you're not supposed to use.

The gauge's instructions explicitly state that should you need to ground the sender, you need to ground directly to the body of the unit, not to the other terminal.

Anyone got a clue on this one? It seems odd they'd manufacture a unit with an extra terminal, considering it costs $$$ to put terminals on stuff....

Thanks!

Why don't you call and ask them? I've talked with the folks at Marshall gages a few times and they are very friendly.

In talking to Steve here at Custom Mini Shop, the main distributor for the Mini specific Marshall gauges here in the USA, he is saying Marshall does not make the sending units, so those sending units are used for other applications as well. But for the Mini, it's not needed Leave it alone.

I guess I'm just insatiably curious. I wasn't planning to hook anything to it, I was just wondering what it was for.

I guess it's for some other application of that pressure sender, that hooks to a different type of system, and it was cheaper to make one sender for both than two separate senders specific to their purposes....

Thanks!
