my '04 has this box with vent grille on the roof liner just above the middle section of the rear seats. i don't think it is a vent since i couldn't feel any air coming in/out. mine does not have a sunroof or automatic ac. the manual makes no mention of this box

no i don't think so because it is too far from any window. it located just a foot back from the ceiling and right above the rear passengers.

I believe the motion sensor for the alarm is suppose to go there. All MINIs that I've seen have that feature in the headliner (including my '02) whether or not they have the alarm.

It’s the containment unit for the particle beam disrupter.

It's definitely the mounting box for the alarm motion sensor. If I am not mistaken, all US-spec MINIs, all years (Incl '02), have the mounting box in place regardless of whether or not you have the alarm. '03 and '04 models come pre-wired for the alarm system; on these years, adding the factory alarm is almost stupid simple and takes less than an hour of time, start-to-finish.

That would be an extra cup holder.
(Don't even ask me how it works.)

God speed.

And all this time I was using the area of the roof between the sunroof and the windscreen as a cupholder. It holds several cups up out of the way, even big gulps. You must remember to remove the cups or close the sunroof before getting underway tho.

My '02 Cooper CVT (8/2002 build) does not have it, but my '04 MCS does.

i kinda thought it contained HEPA filters in case some lunatics gassed us . . .

but the containment unit for the particle beam disrupter seems more plausible.
