Supposedly it will be a dealer add on only. Not a factory option. So then it can be retrofitted to older MINI's.
Pretty interesting. It was just revealed at the Paris Car show.

Yes it says the dealer can hook in your existing one. The question is whether or not it'll even be offered in the US, and if so, when. I ordered the NAV system, but having the IPAQ would be redundant. NOt sure if I should forgo the NAV now and wait for the IPAQ. More gadgets please!!

It says the next modules will be out in March of next year - I wonder if that means the PDA might be available in the states on an '03?

I think that's a better alternative to the NAV system.
But the only worry I have is the amount of money it's going to cost.

First the IPAQ will be more expensive from the dealer. Then the install of the modules will be pretty good and them I'm sure their will be some kind of subscription charge. So as cool as it is it's going to be pricey.

Great, just what we need, more techy mumbo jumbo to keep our attention off of the road. May as well just buy an SUV. Grr.

I'm sure the dealer will charge double for the ipaq, which is already very expensive for a PDA on it's own. I'd be curious to see what the dealer is going to charge, what services will be available and how much, if any, would the recurring monthly be. If all that seems reasonable, I think I'm in...I'm all about the gadgets!

I think monthly fees for services like that around between 10 and 20 bucks, so you should have to worry too much. But don't take my word for it...

IMO, I definitively would go for the IPAQ instead of the NAV SYSTEM simply because the IPAQ doesn't involve relocating the speedo on top of the steering wheel. The only question remaining is: How much??? GPS is great but not a necessity for me. Like Vincenzo said, any copilot can perform tell me when to turn while looking at a map!

I don't know...it's a neat idea, but looks sort of tacked on. In that first picture in particular, the cables look kind of messy, and the sync cable seems about ready to pop off.

Some sort of in-dash cradle that the PDA could snap into would be REALLY cool...

PDX_Mini,
I've yet to hear anything solid. I would assume around March of 03. Seems logical. They mention on the MINI.com site that some Euro markets will get them by November 02 and then mention "Other modules shall follow as of March 03"

But... this is just a guess.... don't hold me to it. We will however keep an ear to the ground and post any info that becomes available.

Happy Motoring,
SW
