R50/53 Dashboard rattle!
Have been driving my Cooper S for about a week, I love it but have one small concern.... There is a lot of rattle from the dashboard, has anybody else experienced this or am I just unlucky, can the dealer repair this? :???:
I'd take it back to the dealer. But, make them ride in the car with you so they can hear the rattle. Otherwise, you are liable to get the old "couldn't reporoduce rattle" excuse from the service department.
We have had our new Cooper for 17 days since taking delivery and not a single problem or rattle!
May I suggest for you to re-tighten the holding screws on the silver posts on each side of the center console? Someone had experienced the same exact problem as yourself and found out that these screws were a bit loose from factory.
Unless there is a really bad squeak or rattle coming from the interior trim, I recommend against allowing a dealer to start taking interior bits and pieces apart....this only introduces more problems overtime as dealers are often inept or incapable of fixing this sort of minor annoyances.
So go and get yourself a screwdriver and give it a try. I am sure your problem will be taken care of once you rectify the adjustment of these center console screws.

Well, as I said, I don't have this rattle, but I would be encouraged by the fact that it seems to come from around the radio. As an easily removable item, it ought to be simple for your dealer (or you) to remove the radio and check for any loose bits behind.
The dash rattles that are a real pain are the ones that come from the "top" of the dash -- which cannot be accessed from below w/o major surgery. Or, rattles that come from the headliner that result in the dealer having to remove the entire headliner to look for loose stays and hangers (something that I've found most dealers -- with other cars -- very reluctant to get into).
Just add it to your list for the first trip to service. I wouldn't be too disappointed.

I just took my MC into the dealer (Schomp in Denver) for the third time to get the dash rattle fixed.
Anthony (head MINI tech) was very pleased to say he'd figured out the cause of the rattle and had submitted a repair bulletin to MINI.
His own MCS had the dash rattle and when he had the windshield out for replacement, he decided to investigate it from the front end. He discovered that there is a set of V shaped metal tines designed to receive and center a pin on the forward dash panel. If the pin does not set firmly into the V tines, it bounces around and rattles.
Anthony found that the most cost effective (time is money) way to fix the problem was to remove the windshield for easy access and pinch the tines so they hold the dash pin firmly in place. Then they put in a new windshield! It surprised me but he found that the labor involved to dismantle the dash from the inside cost several hundred dollars more than the cost of a windshield replacement.
I am so pleased! My old windshield had a big rock chip smack in front of my eyes that I got from following Anthony too closely through some of our Rocky Mountain twisties.

Very interesting about the dash tines!!
I've got a dash rattle that is fixed by gently-yet-firmly pressing upwards on the hood over the speedo. Think I'm going to find out how to take the dash top off and stuff some felt in there.

Yep. Mine stopped, as did Anthony's, with a little pressure on one of the dash top panels. If you're going to try wedging something in there, do it at the front where dash meets windshield. Or ..... wait till you've got a good collection of rock chips and take it to the dealer for Anthony's fix.
