R50/53 worth it?
Last week, my friend, who is really into streetracing, rented a mini and told me that it was quite slow and doesn't have much power. He also said 4 a 30k (canadian) car, it is not worth it for its performance.
Is this true? I have never driven, NOR sat in a mini or mcs myself, but would love to prove him wrong.

Proof is in the pudding. Why not test drive some pudding, real soon?
Proof is in the numbers. Search the stats and compare to a car of similar price.
Prove for yourself, because proving it to your friend may have other factors involved.
God speed.

Well your friend is quite stupid (sorry) for a few reasons:
1) street racing is unsafe.
2) street racing is illegal (at least in the USA, lol).
3) street racing is straight line (at least in the USA, lol).
4) MINIs are not straight line stop light killers.
5) MCSs will beat most semi modified hondas which most kids street race in, and if it's modified, then watch out.
My friend thinks he can beat my stock MCS with a 95 Integra GSR with 120k miles, intake, exhasut, and a nearly shot head gasket, new that thing has 145 hp and 120 tq, old it has less probably and with intake and exhaust it would be about 160 hp and 130 tq, new that is. HA!
But if your friend is the real deal street racing kind with some old detroit iron (all of which are meant for straight line only, lol) or a japanese supercar (none of which were meant for straight line exclusively) who only races other REAL fast (most think they are fast, but a stock honda isnt fast, lol), then he is right.
Anyways, who cares about straight lines, if you're here and want one then you shouldnt.

BK_MCS puts it well. I'll just boil it further down to: idiots who want to street race, espeically stright like, shouldn't own Minis.
The new generation Minis are inspired by what became a rally car and not simple power cars. Thus they are a joy -- even for people like me who care less about high level performanc -- love em for the handling. As noted, they are easily modified for more power for speed freaks (sorry for the unintended double-entendre). I have an unmodified regular Cooper, before delivery worried maybe it wouldn't be powerful enough, but now worry only about speeding tickets (and dings from those big bulgemobiles.)
Yup, drive one and see!

Never driven a MINI? Posting on MCO? Hmmm. You didn't say what kind of MINI your "friend" drove. MINI ONE, Cooper or Cooper S all are different, and I doubt that anyone's "friend" would consider a Cooper S slow. My advise is to, "Get thee to a dealeree, ASAP!
Nothing like actual knowledge will suffice.

Well, Chris, tell him he's absolutely RIGHT! (and absolutely clueless)
A MINI new or classic is not a streetracer in terms commonly used in North America. It is quick enough, especially the S, to run/beat many cars. But you won't find MINIs running NOS etc. It is not 1/4 mile fast.
.HOWEVER - it'll kick the *** of almost any car on any set of twisty roads. Bring it on - Porsche, Viper, Vette, whatever...a MINI can hound the hell out it! (BTW, it would take $30K CND to make a new ricer handle as well)
So what's your pleasure? go fast in a straight line OR really enjoy DRIVING? Ask your friend how many times he smiles when he gets in/drives/thinks about his ricer? MINI owners are smiling all the time. Driving under all circumstances is a fun and rewarding pasttime. The experience is totally different. Most of us make excuses to run errands to get more seat time....

I knew going into MINI ownership that my MC, with its 115 horsepower, wasn't going to be a stoplight terror. Mini's are about the handling, and the driving EXPERIENCE. Let the street racers have their pimpin' Civics, Integras, and Eclipses. Leave the MINI's to the DRIVERS.
The term "street racer" is an oxymoron. It is also an accident waiting to happen. Tell your friend to take his mouth to the track. I honestly don't care what kind of car he/she's driving.
minimad said it so well. yea, my car as 115hp (until i buy the m7 turbo
) but i could care less... when im on a backroad zipping along the corners.. i have a grin a mile wide...
the best part is the mile stays on even when im at work (i have a 9th floor window, so i get to stare at my baby all day...)
if you want to love driving.. the mini is a great choice

haa... well, i would of replied, but my server was down.
yea, i think street racing is stuipid to. doesn't prove much, just who the idiot is when he takes a turn at 80mph.. well, for me, i just like the feeling of the acceleration of the car. i am also really interested in the mcs, which is why i visit this forum.

I rented a black MC 5-speed, with sunroof, 15" holeys in Toronto in July. The car was an '02, with 18,000 KM and looking at the tyres I was not the first to flog it.
On dry pavement it was quite easy to kick in the ASC.
Since you cannot get ASC on the MC south of the border, I assume that because of Canadian law, the base MINI may have different goodies included - so the $30K price.
