MINI won't start - six seconds of panic

I endured about six seconds of extreme panic this AM, wondering why my MINI wouldn't start; until I realized that my left foot was holding down the brake and not the clutch!

Yes, it was a long night; also I drive to work around 5:45AM and it is still very dark here. It is disturbing how much of our driving actions become almost subconscious; my wife's vehicle is an automatic and I sometimes find my left foot moving over to stomp the brake pedal every now and then when I have the occasion to drive her vehicle.

Thankfully, I do not use a cell-phone while driving.

Simular thing happened to me with my Mazda. The car just would not start, untill I noticed that the thickness of my winter carpets was just thick enought so that when I engaged the clutch to start it would not go all the way to the bottom.

Got scared there for a minute also!

I drive an '06 manual and one time got an '07 automatic MINI loaner. It was raining and the rear windshield wiper wasn't working, so I figured I'd just turn the car off and back on when I pulled up to a red light. The car wouldn't start back up and between the different key(couldn't get the keyfob out either!) and being an automatic I couldn't figure out what to do. (I was first at the light, with cars behind me of course!) Needless to say...they don't like being started while still in drive.

I <3 manual.
