Run the "imagination exercise" either at home or during the day a few times. What changes would you need to make as you go abour your driving day in order to have the Lotus? Is weather a concern? a/c? DO you golf, have a bad back, ride a bike, or do anything where space is a concern? Would you have to put on a rack or hitch (and install/remove) when you go anywhere? DO you take people to lunch?

Run through your average week, take into account the + and - of Lotus ownership, as well as running the finance numbers.

Hey - thought of another option: Find a decent modified Porsche 914 - don't laugh, they're great autocross cars! They have the same space limitations, a similar (if somewhat dated) interior, don't cost a boatload, are relatively easy to maintain, and then you can then KEEP the Mini!

Actually when I looked at the Lotus pics on Edmunds, it first reminded me of a buddy's old Fiat X 1/9, but I wouldn't recommend those to anyone other than MAYBE to look at or listen to - from a few yards away. That'd be FRONT yards!

In the end, do what feels and fits best - but do let us know!

This is sooo funny I am in the SAME decision process

I have been on the lotustalk forums gathering as much info that I can because I'm really considering going for a used elise for my next car rather than a MINI (unfortunately)

My main problem is I'm not even 21 yet and income is not up there yet since I'm still at school, so ownership cost is what could kill me, but I would put some regular cheap tires on for my daily commute and do all my repair work myself. I also have a good independent mechanic (which I need to call him soon and see what he has to say).

All-in-all the lotus would fit me perfectly and just be so hardcore to drive everyday. Plus what 21 year old rolls in a lotus haha

Can't wait to see what you decide and see how it all goes (that is if it happens before I do )
