High rev on startup...

My Mini does one of two things at startup. It will either surge to a moderately high rev at startup (3k or so..) , or it will start up normal (1.5k...).. What is going on? I do not want a high rev at startup.

Does it rev up and stay there? I know once I was getting some kind of air leak in my Jeep when I would put it in park causing the rev's to jump and stay high. Maybe check your hoses from your intake or something. I forgot what my exact problem was but I could replicate it by unplugging one of the small hoses.

Is your foot on the pedal? Its a stupid question but theres very little resistance on it and you may just be leaning on it a bit.

Does it rev to 3k on cold-starts only?

Yes, cold days it revs to 3k, but always settles back at normal
