IMHO, strut tower mushrooming can be overcome with a BFH (Big F-in Hammer) and a 2x4 with some camber plates added to prevent it from coming back. Not an expensive fix and you get better handling to boot!
If I heard any noises at all from the transmission or felt anything strange at all with the clutch, I'd skip it. These two components are neither cheap nor easy to fix.
