R50/53 Run-flat tire monitor: a wasted trip to dealership
Well, after repeatedly trying to turn the sensor light off (after verifying that the tire pressure on all fours were OK) and not being able to do so, I called East Bay MINI for a service appointment. Drove 85 miles one way, spent 5 hours total from the time I left home to time I got home, had to buy lunch and pay a bridge toll, only to learn that EB MINI did not stock a replacement part for the defective switch. So I'll have to schedule another appointment when that part arrives at EB MINI.
I thought all dealerships were supposed to stock a reasonable inventory of parts. Is this the way to do business?

Had the same experience. I'm three hours from the dealership, (OK, 2 and 1/2 if I try). Now I schedule ahead, remind them that I'm coming a long way to see their smiling faces, and I call parts dept. a day or two before. To this, they have repsonded well. Good luck Zgocart!
Seems like this is becoming a common problem. A friend just took his Mini S to the dealer because the tire pressure light came on and never came off.
The car is at the dealer now, hope they fix it quick.

Join the club. I have made numerous trips in vain. I even had the dealer call once saying my car was done after waiting close to two weeks for parts. I picked up the car and the fault was still not repaired. They were still waiting for parts that came in two days later. Now I have another wasted day to look forward to. Mini needs more servicing dealers.
I have had the monitor light come on 2 times since I have had the car in March, and the first time. I stopped and got the manual out and in about 3 attempts got it reset. Then about 1 month ago, at night it happened again(wheel spin after first starting up, causes it) I stopped after a 1/2 mile at a church lot and got the manual out and spent 15 minutes trying to reset. Got p*ssed drove home slow, went to bed and the next day went and tried again, after 3 tries it reset. It is an odd little thing.

>>Yikes... next time imma make sure they have the part before driving to the dealership... thanks for the heads up.

Thanks all, for your support. The problem is, not knowing what was wrong with the sensor, I/they probably figure:"Well, let's bring the car in, maybe there's a trick or technique to fix this without a parts replacement."
From now on, I'll follow your advice: call ahead to Parts department and make sure they have the part, whether or not it is needed.

Calling ahead may not help much either. My car arrived from the factory with a broken headlight. I called the dealer (Phoenix), told them I needed a headlight, would bring the car in 5 weeks, and asked them to order the replacement in advance if needed. I left the car with them for 11 days and when I returned I was told that the headlight would need to be ordered and would take a couple of weeks to arrive. I've had the car for 7 months now and the headlight is still just as broken as it was when new. I sure wish they could just mail it to me or to a local BMW dealer.
Now my tire and DSC lights are sometimes lighting and refusing to reset.

Yeah. I don't think that the MINI Parts department really exists in ANY of the dealerships. Every time that I've ever needed anything, they've had to order it, and it takes several days to come in. I called ahead when I went to get an oil filter and they acted like I was a moron: "Uhhh, yeah...that's a part that we'll always have in stock." Well, I would assume that you would have a glove box latch or two back there, but apparently NOT!
Unfortunately that seems to be a common problem with cars with the run flat tire monitor. I had to have mine replaced in my new M3 about a month after I bought it. Then after I got it replaced it happened again. The dealer showed me how to reset it. Unfortunately I don't have the car anymore (it was stolen a month ago). Atleast the Mini has run flats, the M3 doesn't have a spare or run flats, if you get a flat tire you're screwed.
Don't know how to set the monitor on the Mini, I don't take delivery of my new MCS till next week.
Good Luck, I'm sure the dealer will fix it for you.
