Got an Alta shorty, reception is worse when in more remote locations, but it looks so cool and adds at least 30 h.p.

I had the shorty antenna and took it off. Guess it wasn't "shorty" enough. Now I have a makeshift sharkfin, sort of . It really does look good IMO w/o the aerial. The FM works fine, but not the AM. I don't care anyway b/c I always listen to CDs. So I guess this option isn't good for everyone--works great for me, and best it's free.

I have the red shorty... got it from minicooperparts.com months ago. I love it. Reception actually improved somewhat with it! Sorry...no pics.

 We have a shortie antenna also. We haven't noticed any difference in reception to be honest.

And don't forget - the Honda S2000 stubby antenna fits great on the MINI...

Chow!

I guess it would be nice if there was a little shiny black plug to screw in but...I can't see the hole anyway. Can you? No, I don't have any solutions though. Does look good though doesn't it pez?

Yeah it does look hot. I never listen to the radio either so I didn't need the antenna. It kind of bugs me that I haven't found anything good yet to stick in there.

ordered mine from minimania to accomodate my roof racks for surfboards. i believe it's about 2" tall, perfect to clear the boards. reception is a little worse, especially in the mountainous/valley areas, which is quite prevalent on oahu. once i hit town, there's no difference.

I bought the Alta Shorty antenna, and everything worked fine with my stock reciever until I upgraded it. I couldn't pick up any stations. I threw my stock antenna on and I could pick up everything.

I got the blue stubby from minicooperparts.com. The reception was crappy with the stock antenna, and remains crappy with the stubby. In other words, no change.

I have the Honda antenna. IMO it looks lots better. It was inexpensive and took about 30 seconds to install.

BTW, the physical/exterior length of an antenna usually has nothing to do with reception. Think about it, if length mattered, then all radio antennas on US cars (which all have radios that tune the same frequencies) would be identical in length! Rather, the reception of an antenna is a function of the length of the conductive material in proportion to the wave length of the signal the antenna is trying to receive...and this material can be wound tightly, not-so-tightly, or not wound at all and solid. That's why the MINI shark fin antenna (which is lots shorter than the stock AM/FM antenna) still works for AM/FM radio reception.

You saw the MINIMania version mounted on our PW MINI at RS last weekend and YES, it does deteriorate. :???:
Thinking about the BeeSting with the stylish elongated elliptical tip.

Maybe we should be all getting the shark fin antenna?

Here are some pics and sources
Honda S2000 antenna screws on with little fuss. It works. Less than $15

Thanks for the input everyone. Those of you who have the Honda antenna, did you get it from a Honda dealer or do MINI accessory places have it?

My Mini arrived antenna less off the transport truck...didn't have a problem with the reception at all.

Dealer shipped me a new one.

Depending on your local radio reception factors the MINI's radio will work without any antenna. When you get to a hard to reach area then the antenna works to your advantage.

The normal retail price for a Honda S2000 antenna is more like $25 in my area and they were all sold out-all the time. So the parts person at Honda sold me a Honda Element antenna which is nearly identical and fits fine. I used my 15% off coupon they sent me in the mail. The MINI dealerships don't sell the shorter antenna except for the stubby one for about $29 or so.

I like the longer stock antenna with an Italian Job Yellow Ball also. It makes it easier to find the car when parked in a large mall parking lot. I may have to get a longer antenna
cause the SUVs are out in force here in CO.
Happy Thanksgiving.

I bought one from a vw site - it can be found at some MINI parts places as well. (can't remember the name though) It is a SUPER SHORT! and it works just as well as the stock. You need to spray it with clear lacquer or it will corrode however. Easy ernough to do and it looks cool! You can check it out on the page listed below.

Have fun!!!
