Manual Transmission problems HELP !?!?!?!?!
Hi all,

Just took my Beautiful 2003/04 Manual 36000 miles Mini Cooper Baby to my mechanic with a fast flutter/hum when I shift and he told me he thinks it is the transmission going. :eek2:

No shifting problems, no missing in gear etc and no loud noise. I can only hear it when I shift 1-2-3- with the AC off and windows up.

Could it be something else?????

Maybe Clutch or???

Mini service ( on the phone ) said it would be around $5000 to fix if it was the transmission. Service said they don't rebuild.

My Mechanic can do it including the clutch and labor( since they have to take clutch out anyway might as well replace clutch with the tranny)for $2100.

IDEAS - HELP - Other possiblities of problem. -- :confused:

If it's the tranny it makes no sense to replace with a recon as it the same old Midlands prob.Minimania.co.uk offer an uprated box

My transmission on my 03 has similar breakage and it only has 57,000 miles on it. I have heard that the early mini's have this problem.

i know im new here but im not new to cars in the least, to me it sound like the throwout bearing. you said it only hums when you shift and that would be you pressing the clutch pedal. i've had the same issue on my audi. others might be able to chime in with more help.

I thought the same thing but the noise occurs when the car is in gear and is accelerating or decelerating, not when shifting. The fluid was changed a few days ago and the drain plug looked a chia-pet with metal shavings.

Here's a rebuild kit if you want it done on a budget. My advice is ditch the Midlands and get your mechanic to put in a Getrag. I found one here on Ebay. There are threads here on the procedure if any help is need with the install.:thumbsup:
