R50/53 Help - How to replace filters on hood below windshield
Help - How to replace filters on hood below windshield
Ok.I've had my Mini since March 2003. Since then, the (external) filters in the vents below the windshield, next to the wipers, have completely disintegrated (I've attached a photo since my description is likely unclear). I have no idea what they do or where to get replacements (I've searched far and wide).
So, I would greatly appreciate some assistance with the following:
1) What type of filters are supposed to go in here?
2) Where can one purchase such filters?
3) Bonus question: what is the purpose of these filters?
Thanks.

Actually, those grills were changed in 04 models, I believe, and were replaced with a revised grill with no foam lining. Not sure if the dealership sells the foam lining, but you could purchase the revised grill and not have to deal with the foam disintegrating again in the future.

The foam really served no purpose and the revised gril has no foam so you can pop the gripp off and just remove the shreds to clean things up.
On my 02, I took the grills off, removed the foam and cut some HomeDespot gutter guard mesh to shape and placed it in the grill inserts. I like the look - sorry don't have a picture - but it is easy and looks good enuf that others have asked me to do it for them. Haven't figured a way to put the mesh on the newer grills so a few have even gone looking for the earlier grills for the look....Still serves no real purpose tho.
One section of metal grill mesh. 36 inches, gives plenty of material for just a couple of buck. Tin snips or good shears to cut it,

Mine went bad a couple of years into ownership, and the dealership replaced the grills with the newer style sans foam. No charge. I think it was one of those unstated TSBs: "if the owner complains, fix it. Otherwise don't say anything."
