R50/53 Meeting other MINI owners: How do you meet them?

Unfortunately, 99.9% of MINI owners aren't quite as, uh, OBSESSED as I am... so after a few words of pleasantries, things quickly turn to MINI talk and within about 90 seconds their ears start to bleed and they run away screaming... I usually lose them somewhere between the One-Ball Mod and the custom Polish leather....

Before you guys start throwing accusations around and pointing fingers at the mods, consider what happens when a post is reported for being offensive. Do the mods ignore it or not? Get in their shoes for once before moaning about how uncool it is to have to make decisions like this on a daily basis.
depressing. should've gotten her number.
"If I am going to hell Im going in a bug!"
But yeah, I have never been approached by another mini owner. Only at the MINI dealer has that happened. However I have been talked to by numerous drivers at lights, a few people in parking lots and the best of all... a porsche carrera S driver actually leaned into my window at a petrol station and commented on my car. I said his was nice too

I have no issue with the title change -- other than not getting any feedback as to why. If it was out of line, I'd love to hear why -- I would not want to make the same mistake twice.
Instead, I'm left guessing. Was is the mental image of dogs sniffing each other? Domesticated dogs in North America date back something like 6000 years (thanks, Jared Diamond), more here in Europe. So, I figured that was a safe cultural reference to make. Was it the use of the word ***? Google says it appears over 1500 times across the board. Was it because the word was used in the subject line? Did someone object?
So, for me, it's not that they made a change, it's for not telling me -- the guy who wrote it -- what it is that is wrong with what I did. I'm all for doing what is right -- just tell me what that is. If I can't learn from history, I am doomed to repeat it.
Hey kids...I hear ya...I referenced a fictional James Bond movie character and they blotted out the first name. (Last name Galore, movie: Goldfinger - you figure it.)
ANYWAY....What OCTANEGUY said -- think of how many posts each of YOU do in a day.........can you imagine how many "I object to this word (or insert "that word") notes they have to moderate? I agree they should have let you know, but....Your intent w/ the thread is the same, and our participation hasn't slacked, so let's swing with that. I think we're rolling pretty well!

Yep.
When I was at vehicle registration the time before, I was swapping the tags out on my R53, and low and behold, one of them newfangled Minis pulls up next to me. Just a Cooper, not one of them turbocharged things. He'd obviously just gotten off the boat from America.
Still happy with the Cooper, I asked, or do you wish you had an S for the autobahn? Good conversation, and a lot of good talk about fuel economy vs. all-out autobahn speeds.

Man, do i miss Germany!!! I lived in Baumholder, where they had mucho autocross...but did I ever get to play or even watch?? Nooooo....I had WORK do to.
*******.
I guess it kinda surprised me, living in Germany and what with BMW engineering....Many of the German Mini owners were SO UN-enthusiastic compared to UK types or US types. Lotsa non-wavers. And it was not easy to strike up conversations with them - not because of a language barrier, but more because they weren't as interested.

BlimeyCabrio..... I may be as obsessed as the .1%
I am 1 of 6 women at a company of over 120 that sells aftermarket parts for Jeeps. I hear nothing but Jeep this, and Jeep that ALL DAY!
So if I even for a second, think someone is interested in my car, or Minis in general..... I will not shut up!!!!
To add to this thread, I most of the time have people come up to me about my Mini and usually start a conversation with one of 2 things:
1. "I love the color of your Mini! You never see that color." (it's solid gold), or
2. "I love your license plate! Where can I get one?" (it says: FEAR THE MINI)

Nice plate, KittyMini. Mine are part of my conversation starters if I'm near it at the time. x UHOH x for the Mini or TRUUBLE for the truck.
I have now initiated a "Convert to MINI" campaign at work. I've now enabled THREE people to constantly talk MINI talk to others! Only convinced one to actually BUY a Mini, but it's a first step. I've turned my boss into a MINI spotter, and my higher up boss into one of those guys who drools over my car. I"m obsessive & possesive enough I can't bring myself to let anybody else drive it, though...
hee hee... I like those x uh oh x
Not a big fan base for Minis at work, but I belong to a pretty big, pretty active Mini club, so I get to chat a lot with them on their forum, or on this one.
When people ask my vacation plans for this year, they are:
1. July 13th- AutoX
2. Oct 4th- 175 mile trek through some mountain towns with the club, and...
3. Oct 14th and 15th- 2 day race school at Pocono Raceway.
Can ya see a pattern?

Welcome to the Club of the MINI Obsessed. I wish my local club were a little more active...makes me feel like a stand-alone nut. !!! Maybe that's why I'm on a kick to make converts. I'm a LONELY nut!
Lucky for me, my hubby is a big Mini fan, so I can chew his ear on a daily basis.
Yeah, I belong to PhillyMini- last year, they had 47 events! It may be even more this year.
I also belong to a BMW chapter, so that's where the racing school comes in... one of the instructors is a friend of mine, so he got me connected there.

MY hubby has not yet been converted...although I'm doing everything in my power!! He has a BMW, but kinda drives like Ms. Daisy so...He thinks I'm a maniac. His favorite new feature on MY mini (from my '04 to my '07) was the J.C. or OH S&&T bar!!
Sigh.....I'm either going to have to volunteer more for social activities within the club (which is already 30+ minutes away, and tough with my job) or go farther afield to find more nuts. The local club has many gear-head-types, but has a tough time getting together due to conflicting schedules.

The #1, #2, and #3 in my organization have Minis. #1 has an R56 that he bought for his wife; #2 is an incredibly tall man, and has an R53 just for fun; and #3 bought an R53 for his son, who has left it with him while he's off at college. And yes, they all drive them when they can.
And around the office, I got some strange looks in April, when I was getting ready for a long weekend and the Minis in the Alps trip. 4 people, 4 days, 1000+ miles, in a Mini? Damn skippy!
And yes, I've asked #1, #2, and #3 about their cars, and offered advice on things to buy and install to protect their investments and / or improve their adventures. My fanaticism showed through, pretty quickly!
