WOW!! Thanks for all the very helpful info!! I think the ideas about higher octane make sense. I used to run only Sunoco high test in my Volvo, but then found BP (Amoco) gave about 4 more MPG, both winter and summer. I think I will try a Sunoco for my next fill up and see if power and mileage change. I may ask the dealer about brands with additives and whether to use them at all, or intermittently. I'll let you know if I find any new info. So tanks (oops) again!

Well I did learn some. Today someone asked me how much air I run in the tires, and whether they were hi performance tires (same kinda weird look as the gasoholic). So I faked this intense, stern look and said 'that's the same question that my ex-wife asked me, just before she asked me for a divorce' then told him I gotta get outa here-- and hopped in the mini and back on the road. I think I'm gonna come up with a few of these survival comments for such questions. Without this, I'm afraid i will acquire a group of gasoholics that will keep me company in my old age...

Thanks again,
Steve

Just thought I would mention this...

Filled up at Mobil this morning and because of this thread I took a little more time to look over the posted information on the pump.

Premium at this station was rated at 91 octane (there was nothing higher). It was however calculated using the Ron Mon devide by 2 method.

It also contains MTBE. I have no clue what that is for, and that fact that there is a warning from the state of california about it's "toxicity" concerns me a little also.

Next fill I am going to go to a 76 station and see what they offer.

MTBE is a clean air additive that is now in phase out in California. Unocal already has eliminated MTBE use (MTBE is a known carcinogen and has been linked to getting into ground water through run-off).

I think it would be wise to buy gas from a company which owns a refinery in your area since most will keep the good stuff for themselves...
My motorcycle runs smoother with Shell
I never fuel in old gas stations, don't want to spoil engine and reservoirs and first preserve environment
Gas is like everything else, you get what you pay for, all is not the same and you have to take care.
Have fun
