After shopping at Costco, I pushed my heavily loaded cart to my Mini. Iremoved the luggage compartment cover and placed it on the car roof. After putting the rear seats down, I loaded Mini with all the wonderful purchases from Costco. I drove home, unloaded Mini and noticed my luggage compartment cover was missing. Looked on the roof -- not there. Whoops! :???:
I live 15 miles from Costco, so I started driving FAST. Within two blocks of Costco I saw the cover in the middle of the road and a car driving over it. The wife got out, picked it up and put it in the luggage compartment. I drove to Blockbusters for some movies, stopped, looked at the damage to the cover and was just sick. Decided to get comedy movies. Anyone else done something as stupid as this. Needless to say, I'll be crying the blues all the way to the dealership. If you will tell me how to upload pictures, I'll show you the damage. |
Just don't leash your dog to the rear bumper! (ala National Lampoon's Vacation)

Well, there's this urban legend that turns out to be actually true...
Children left on roofs of cars Oh well, now you get to find out how much that part costs. Probably isn't too bad if you order if from someplace such as Classic. |
Ouch,
Once (not at band camp) a hunting buddy left his Parker shotgun on the roof and drove off. He realized his mistake about a mile into the trip and quickly his left hand shot our of the window and onto the roof. As luck would have it, the gods must have been hunting with Parkers that day too. It was still there, with only a tiny rub along the blued barrel. That was his luckiest day hunting ever. |

Sorry about what happened, I have driven hatch backs for years and have gotten in the habit of placing the rear cover in between the front and back seats it doesn't take up much room and is usually protected there. good luck with the next one.

I left a Nikon F3 on my truck tool box one time, drove 4 miles and it was just sitting there when I looked for it.
I took an under 12 year old boys soccer team to New Zealand about 25 years ago, (17 boys). We travelled in two Toyota mini buses. The first day, while on the way to our lodgings, we stopped for refreshments by the side of the road. After commencing our journey and driving for an hour I discovered one boy was missing. An hour later after back tracking, we found Darren happily sitting on a wall waiting for us. After that, I counted the boys often. |
Well, at least you found it. Hope it's OK. I do stuff like that all the time. I always leave a drink on the roof before I get in--well you know the rest. Gotta stop that  .

Hrach (sales guy at MINI Peabody) does this great trick with the cover:
He does not disconnect the strings. Instead he lifts it out of its slots and tucks it behind the trunk opening strut. Keeps it attached to the car but out of the way - and you can't shut the trunk without putting it back in place  (for next time, when you have bought a new one) |
Does putting a drink on your roof without realizing that the sunroof is open count? Sad thing is that I've done that more than once - but never with my MINI (at least not yet)
|
Pete Seeger left his Banjo (This Banjo Kills Fascists) on the roof of his car once. Thought it was stolen, but a few days later someone found it along the side of the road.
I can relate... |
Sorry for your misfortune...it could have happened to anybody here. Thank you for sharing this much needed reminder...I know I'll be thinking twice!!!

That's a shame! The cover fits perfectly behind the front seats. Just fold the rear seats down and place the cover on the floor where the rear seat leg room usually is. Viola - perfect Costco wagon! |
Damned costco and their bulky goods! no I love costco, they have free food samples
Sorry to hear about what happened. If I ever take that part off I usually leave it in my garage or something |
The worst I've seen was when I was in college and we all walked out of class and I saw a student put his books and papers on the top of his car, he messed around in the back seat and then got in the front... as he started his car I yelled out "your books" so he got out to get them. A split second before he had his hands on them, a big gust of wind came and papers went flying! About 4 of us chased them down! It was terrible!
I feel bad that you went back to find it being run over in the street! |
I make a weekly run to Costco in the MINI for petrol and stuff. On those few occasions when all the stuff don't fit in the boot, I fold down the back seats and take off the hatch cover.
The hatch cover fits behind the front seat vertically with the round cut-out resting on the rear cupholder console. I make this a habit to avoid such mishaps as leaving it somewhere to later forget where it is  |
Hey Ducttape,
Do you know the difference between a banjo and an onion?? Nobody cries when you cut up a banjo. |
Mr. Bean left himself on top of his mini once. |

Ahhh, that was the best episode...

Sorry to hear about that. I don't even use mine. I took it off because I see no point in having it really. Except maybe keeping prying eyes out of your boot. But I don't keep anything back there anyway b/c the last thing I want when I'm flying around corners is stuff shifting around back there

Yeh did that one. We were running late for work when I set a Coke on the roof, but the sun roof was open. The real problem was the Coke landing on my wifes head. That was devorce number 143 I think ... we took deferent cars. You only make this mistake once. Motor on |
