R50/53 Totaled?
I think she is going to allow them to total it and get a new one. With what the insurance company is offering is the price of the car, plus she has gap insurance. I think it may be her best bet to get a new car with no worries about a repair job.
OT re airbags...
Yes, airbags are designed to NOT go off unless the impact is so severe that there will be major injury. The airbag itself will cause minor injuries, so they're not always a good idea. My friend recently had an airbag accidentally deploy and ended up with some nicks, scrapes and a banged up cornea to show for it. Not good.
Car & Driver, Road & Track, etc. were all DOWN on bags, mainly because they were clearly "NOT READY FOR prime-time" at that early stage
. A bunch of problems such as no proof that anyone was ever actually saved
, deploying accidentally and injuring folks
, NOT deploying when people had not used their "active restraints"
(read: "seatbelt") and adding several hundreds of $$ to the price of a car
, then throw in a general dislike of "nanny gub'mint"
and big brother telling me what I MUST put on a car...and you get some real serious anti-passive-restraint folks. Our favorite cars (that we could actually afford)were bug-eyed Sprites and Spitfires!! AIRBAGS??!! HAH!!Looking back, I often remember those days of personal responsibility and Darwinian law still at work among the human species with great fondness.
Ah, well...
Airbags have come a LONG way, baby!! Humans, on the other hand, maybe not so far.
