I thought it over and figured that with very tight spacing under the bonnet, there's gonna be a lot more damage within. I say over 10K, and hope for a total loss for your sake.

I think she is going to allow them to total it and get a new one. With what the insurance company is offering is the price of the car, plus she has gap insurance. I think it may be her best bet to get a new car with no worries about a repair job.

OT re airbags...

I'm going on 55. I remember when airbags were looked upon with scorn by enthusiasts (I was among them -- I was in my late teens and early 20's then.)

Car & Driver, Road & Track, etc. were all DOWN on bags, mainly because they were clearly "NOT READY FOR prime-time" at that early stage . A bunch of problems such as no proof that anyone was ever actually saved , deploying accidentally and injuring folks , NOT deploying when people had not used their "active restraints" (read: "seatbelt") and adding several hundreds of $$ to the price of a car , then throw in a general dislike of "nanny gub'mint" and big brother telling me what I MUST put on a car...and you get some real serious anti-passive-restraint folks. Our favorite cars (that we could actually afford)were bug-eyed Sprites and Spitfires!! AIRBAGS??!! HAH!!

Looking back, I often remember those days of personal responsibility and Darwinian law still at work among the human species with great fondness.

Ah, well...

Airbags have come a LONG way, baby!! Humans, on the other hand, maybe not so far.
