Why does TireRack need to know if my '06 was built before/after July for winter rims?

When you go to the TireRack site, it asks you if your 2006 Cooper non-S was built before of after July to determine the applicable rim size for a winter package setup. It will say the minimum is either 15" or 16", depending on the date of manufacture.

Were there any changes made to the brake setup or anything else causing the necessity for 16s over 15s? What is the reason for this?

Thanks!

The lug nuts were made bigger in late 06. They went from 12.xx mm to 14.25 I belive.

They need to know whether your car has M12x1.5 or M14x1.25 wheel bolts. MINIs built from 07/12/2006 have the latter size wheel bolts and not all aftermarket wheels will work with those.

Are the TireRack black steel wheels hub-centric? I ordered them with a set of Revos and haven't had a chance to mount them yet.
