I had a major suprise today. I discovered that all the car property taxes have been reduced this year by 70%. This is good till 12/31/02.

I had purchased a new Miata and was UNanxiously waiting for the tax bill.
It came yesterday and rather than the $1,500 I expected--- it was only $220.

Can we say jumping for joy? 2002 is the Year to buy a MINI (or any new car )in Virginia and take advantage of the 70% off a new car property tax.

They tax your car after you buy it? Hmmm, interesting, the dealerships are required in California to collect the sales tax of the car and send it in to the State. They are not taxed as property. Although with our DMV fees they might as well be. Oh, if you buy your car in another county that has lower sales tax such as Orange County they tax you on where you live not where you bought the car. This only applies to cars. Tell me that it doesn't suck.

Virginia also charges 3% sales tax on cars at the time of sale. Brownielocks is referring to the personal property tax which is assessed yearly and based on a percentage of the fair market value of the car. It's basically the same as the registration fee in CA. Same tax, different name. Virginia has been phasing it out over the past few years, which is good, but now the state is broke, which is bad. The state will probably raise the sales tax or income tax to make up the difference.

Well, at least your sales tax is reasonable, I currently live in the Bay Area and it is 8.25% sales tax in Alameda County. Plus registration fees etc. I'm a home grown Southern California (I haven't gotten used to N.CA, it really is home to the fruits and nuts - Berkley is to close) but we are no longer wanting to just make it in California. Moving to Colorado, people say it isn't cheap there either but everywhere is cheaper to live than here!

BTW, I wouldn't move from Virginia, nice state, but I like VA, NC and SC.
