R50/53 Octane Booster
Octane Booster
A few weeks ago on my way to the gas station, I decided to stop by an auto supply store and pick up one of the octane boosters. I bought Super Octane 104+. Added it to my tank (which was almost empy) and refueled. The car ran great! My butt dyno told me there was a definite performance increase. A week later I repeated the process and after a day or two the engine started surging and bucking. That lasted for the duration of the tank of fuel. When I refueled I added a bottle of Techron (which I have used for years) and after about 50 or 60 miles the engine smoothed out and is now running beautifuly. I googled the product and found out other performance cars have experienced simalar problems. Has anyone here on NAM had any simalar experiances?
There have been a few questions about that in the past. Some people say the same thing, only without the sputtering. They say, at first its like a new motor than it fades. My $.02 is that as long as you pay the extra 10-15 cents for better gas (read:not convience store gas) from Exxon/Mobil or one of those name brand places, there is no need for octane booster. People generally have better results on good gas and a fuel system cleaner as compared to a booster. IMO, this is the best stuff you can get.

Motors built within the last 30 years have been required to run on unleaded 93 octane (maximum) gas.

I definitly agree. I have only repeat ONLY used Chevron 93 octane in my cars for the past 20 years. It's one of the few TopTier gasolines on the market. Every 5000 miles (at oil change) I add a bottle of Techron. No more Boosters!

The problem w/ some of the boosers is that they use MMT (it's some kind of manganese compound), which could be the reason you had those symptoms. The MMT can cause reddish deposits on the spark plugs (and presumably other parts inside the cylinder) which can cause fouling.
