FWIW, I have a Jan 03 build S, and after 8,000+ miles, the only problem I had was a rock chip in my windshield. I've had zero mechanical issues with the car (knock on wood).

 

Thanks to everyone who responded. Seeing the many responses indicating that most problems were covered under warranty or just minor cosmetic issues was helpful. It wasn't too nice to hear that JD Power survey that rated Minis and Hummers at the bottom of the list in new car owner satisfaction though!

This place reminds me of the Miata user group (we had one until the kids arrived!), which is intended as a compliment. Thanks again for the advice - no nervousness remains!
