R50/53 MINIs with HAM radios?
MINIs with HAM radios?
Just currious how many HAM's are out there in mini's
I'm currently running an icom 2720 with a MFJ through the glass dual bander. I'm not at all happy with the performance. I'm considering using the FM antenna hole for a roof mount. Anyone done this? or something else that works without looking like a hack job.
Thanks,
Mike

When I get my MINI I will be putting the CB I have in my current car into the MINI. Laugh all you want, I love CB radios. I don't see the Mini group as being into that sort of thing though.
No HAM though, sorry :(

There are a few MINI-driving hams on the forums; do a search and you'll find some threads.
I haven't installed my mobile in my MINI yet, but I'll have something of a similar setup. Icom IC-207H with a through-the-glass dual-band antenna. Which window did you use for your mount?

I'm a ham with a 2007 Mini, but no radio installed. I'm wondering how seriously I should take the Mini warnings about operating radio equipment inside the car. They make it sound like the computer will fuse and the airbags will erupt.

Kenwood D700 w/ APRS
I have a '06 Mini S and installed my Kenwood D700 w/ APRS. I used a dual-band glass mount on the drivers side and it works great. I live in the Sacramento, CA area and was able to reach the W6AK repeater in Sacramento from Myers, CA, (about 10min from So. Lake Tahoe) with the set-up. You can see my APRS at http://www.findu.com/cgi-bin/find.cgi?KG6IFV-1.
You can also look at my gallery where I posted some pictures of how I installed my rig.
I have to admit, I havn't heard the warning about not operating radio equipment inside the car. Don't cell phones count as radio equipment too??

My dad is a ham from way back. I am a newbie, KD8FKT. A long time ago, I saw this file on the Yahoo MINI group for installation of a Yaesu 1500:

Seems like a pretty good way of getting the job done.

I installed the antenna on the passenger rear window. I ran the coax throught the seat belt slot. The Icom 2720 has a remote head so I mounted the body inside the pannel in the rear on the passenger side. I mounted the controll head under the dash switches using velcro and mounted a remote speaker with velcro behind that.
I have a Cobra CB installed in mine, it hides on the parcel shelf. The antenna is mounted on the rear side glass. Now that I dont have to worry about practicing code to get my ticket, I should get offa my duff and just do it.
I have CB as well. My two bosses and a friend have them installed. Great for backroad driving and chatting. 2 ways are sooo staticy.
