o4 mini s oil filter removal tool????

New member here, hope you guys can help me. I read a lot of the posts that had to deal with oil changes and I felt that I could tackle it no problem.... until it came to removing the filter housing the largest socket that I have is a 32 mm and my normal oil filter wrench (the band type) will not grip the hard aluminum body. I'm want to heed the warning you all have given about how touchy this part of the job is .. so what do you guys use??

A socket....

I got mine at Sears. Lots of the vendors sell a short socket for the job.

welcome aboard!

you'll need something like this: http://new.minimania.com/web/Item/NME1051/InvDetail.cfm

but you can get it from any good hardware store. i forgot what size it is, but it's huge. do a search and you'll find the size. i got mine from osh. also, make sure the one you get is shallow/short enough to fit thru the space

Thanks guys I really just needed to know the socket size. I did a better search this time with the proper wording I found some great info.
Good sight!

36mm
The regular size socket (1/2" drive) will just fit. If you have the hankering, it can be cut down with a dremel tool cutoff wheel (ask me how I know!) to give you a bit more room to play.

A dremel tool with lots of cutoff wheels and plenty of time. (Ask me how I know!) But, hey, it works.

If it is a cabrio...(supercharged)....look from the top, back side if the motor. It is a cap like thing with a bolt on the end....attatch the wrench/socket, remove the housing. The filter is inside still. There are lots of good Diy's with pictures. If it is a r-56 (turbo), I'm not sure, I have a r-53!!

Thanks ZippyNH

I actually found it to the left and under the radiator fluid reserve..youtube had a video for an 08 and turns out mine's the same :) Now just to get the HUGE socket lol

One warning...do a quick search....the size of the socket on gen2 may be different than the cars discussed on this page...gen1.

monelsway 01-18-2010 04:50 PM

Thanks I'll look into that tonight..if you find anything before I do feel free to post it for me..and anyone else that has an '07
