BMW 2-series coupe. Will this thing eat into Mini's marketshare?

So it looks like this is the 2-series coupe that will come to north america
http://www.2addicts.com/forums/showthread.php?t=377

Not sure I like that thing much but thats besides the point. I'm curious if this will somehow cannibalize the sales of Minis here in north america at all. I hope BMW knows what they're doing and this won't be a complete flop like the 318ti's

Why should it? It's nothing like a Mini in any way.

MaxN Feb 5, 2007 09:48 AM

Looks like the car that will replace my wife's 325i in a few years time.

The 3-series has got bigger and bigger, the '87 325iS I had for years was a perfect size - this looks to be similar - not a Mini competitor, just something to allow the next 3 to occupy the old 5's slot I guess.

Actually if they drop the 335i turbo engine into this car, it will probably be quite a hit.

If that's a hatch version in the last photo, there'd be some similarity. My guess, and guess only, is that the price difference would leave them appealing to different markets.

Anyone have a guess what they'll price at?

Gromit801 Feb 5, 2007 10:53 AM

I think very, very few people buy Mini's because they want a BMW. I can see some Japanese imports being threatened by this new BMW, but the Mini is a completely different animal.

kenchan Feb 5, 2007 11:06 AM

i would get a Scion instead of that.

Like the Mini, the Scion is WWD - thats Wrong Wheel Drive.

As I said earlier I adored my '87 325iS, it had everlything that I wanted, it was a 2+2, 2-door coupe with a sweet 2.5ltr I-6, rear drive, excellent brakes, handling and balance. I sold that car with 230K miles on the clock !

The 1-Series Coupe (ie a 2nn), then it will probably be a spritual descendent of the glorios E36 325iS / M3 line. In other words a true drivers car packaged into a compact chassis.

I may be tempted.......

Nope, not for me. Looks like a cookie cutter 2 door to me:roll:

valcom111t Feb 5, 2007 04:01 PM

I'm sure it will cost quite a bit more than the MINI.

MyPocketRocket Feb 5, 2007 06:57 PM

I think BMW need a new designer...and marketing team.

kenchan Feb 6, 2007 12:48 PM

mistro Feb 6, 2007 01:03 PM

Sorry but I'd be thinking about it... in 2010

anathema Feb 10, 2007 09:10 PM

1 series is looking pretty sweet, wonder what the main differences are between this 2 series and the 1 series?

Will they be making a M1 or M2??

billie_morini Feb 10, 2007 09:50 PM

Miniac,
your green 2002 is fantastic. My wife is still drving her red one (non tii, but modded) everyday. I cant get her to give the silly thing up for a new car. She's got Recaro seats in addtion to mild engine mods. If BMW would bring back the 2002, then I'd be able to talk her into a new car.

Thanks ...

Unfortunately, due to having only one garage space, I had to sell it shortly after buying my 2002 MCS.

It was hard to let it go after buying it new and driving it for almost 30 years
