Navigation & Audio Call me crazy: Nutty stereo upgrade via dealer (w/pics!)
Update: I went to the dealership on Saturday to meet with the MINI service manager. We had a very good, healthy conversation on the problems with the car right now. I supplied to him printed out posts from the last week on this thread (selectively chosen for useful technical data), as well as a copy of 03ibmini's PMs, regarding the DPSM amp resolution he got from his dealership.
He was very thankful for the input, and agreed that we need to ensure the wiring is healthy & in good shape as a baseline for any further troubleshooting.
He was going to read through all of the materials I gave him, and pass them along to the night shift manager, and several techs. He even thought of another tech who worked there that would probably be good at wire testing, which would at least give some relief to the main tech working on my car.
Thanks again to everyone for your help & support... I'm going out there again tonight to meet with the main tech, who should be back from vacation!

Minor update: I did go out to MoS last night, met up with the tech, and filled him in on the info & discussion I had with the service manager. He was surprised at Dan/PGT's results, and agreed as well that proper testing needs to be done to ensure there's no wiring issue.
Since a replacement DPSM harness has already been tried, we can reasonably speculate that there may be a wiring problem in the OEM Boost audio wiring harness. Worst case scenario would be replacing that harness... it's a good thing it is now a separate harness from the main harness! However they may simply run a new wire to replace any found defective.
I told him that as long as whatever they do is properly supported for warranty work, I didn't care how they fixed it.
Hopefully thorough wiring testing will happen this week, although Thanksgiving is likely to throw a wrench into that. I'll stop by next Monday again for an update.
Side note - he said that he doesn't think there's a pinout diagram for the DPSM amp on the systems he has access to, either.

Haemish - I'd be happy to talk to the tech if you want....give him my #...I'm up late with the little one these days

One point of clarity - how late is OK? Remember, he works until something like 3 or 4 in the morning. I just want to give him a cut-off time so that he doesn't have to feel awkward about the time he calls, if he chooses to.

Incidentally, I edited your post and mine to remove the tech's name... I'm not sure that he wants his name specifically stated online, so I've always referred to him as "the tech", just as a courtesy.
If it is, I stand corrected. I had assumed not because I have not seen MINI describe it as such. When a product has a digital amp, the fact is usually publicized as a selling point (for DPSM, they went so far as to put "Digital Power" in its name). I know that the H/K does have digital signal processing in its preamp.
I just noticed in MotoringFile's post of the MINIUSA 2008 Convertible Press Kit that it does describe the H/K amp as digital. I may have missed it in other literature.
quick question .. w/o reading all entries of the thread .. is Mr. OEM back home or still @ MoS? the last time we were waiting for the "delivery" was the end of Sept. at Mark's BBQ..
Still at MoS. In our last episode (
) our hero was undergoing additional wiring testing when a visiting surgeon discovered an issue in that area.
As for now, I think we're on hold until the writer's strike is over.

I did go to MoS on Monday night. There really wasn't much development, as the tech only worked Monday & Tuesday nights last week (due to Thanksgiving). However, he reported that he had done some wire testing after our last conversation, and yes indeed he was able to repeat Dan/PGT's test results and found the left rear speaker wire to not tone out. The belief is that the wiring issue is in the "factory" (i.e. replacement) audio harness, not the DPSM harness, although I'm not sure that he had tested them separately yet.
And Marina (lastrega), you can find out whether my car is back at any time simply by looking at my signature.

Unfortunately, those of us who prefer the 1st Gen hardtops don't have that luxury, since they aren't manufactured any more.
Didn't GBMINI say that you can do a fairly simple cut/splice to install the DPSM in an HK car?
Of course ... simple to me may or may not be simple to others.
perhaps they should teach Wire Theory 101 at the next MINI Tech School. Seems all they've taught so far is the 'open a new box and slap a part on' solution to troubleshooting.
