making a bracket for the iPod

I am thinking of making a bracket that I can velcro my ipod to, so I can place the ipod against it when I play the ipod, but then easily remove it and store the ipod on my parcel shelf. The bracket will be placed above the driver's right knee so the ipod is against the top of the left downtube

There are two screws, which are heavily recessed, on each side of the down tubes near the top .....if I remove one screw at a time and replace the screw with a longer one such that the end of the screw will poke its head out so I can screw a bracket plate to secure it against the side of the downtube, will the radio or AC controls, or anything, shift and make it difficult to easily re-insert the screw?

Also, have not looked in at the screw heads...are they torq screws? does anyone know the size and length of those screws?

EDIT: I added some pictures of my completed bracket/mount in post #15 below

There are already brackets for sale that attach to the downtubes. No new screws are needed.

www.newministuff.com

Mikey has one that will do what you want.

These screws are torx screws (25 and 40).

Have you thought about mounting / remounting your ipod adapter or Aux input right into your parcel shelf? That's what I did. Never had a problem with the ipod moving anywhere.

They are torq, can be T20 or T40, possibly depending on the year of the car? I'm trying to remember (I just took mine out a few months ago); I may have had one of each...

I can't imagine putting a longer bolt would hurt anything, other than not securing the down tube tight enough (to cause rattle or something like that).

Good luck

I did this with a piece of scrap aluminum. I bent the metal the shape I wanted, removed the passenger side downtube, drilled holes where the two torx screws go and mounted it between the tube and the radio.

The metal is covered in black felt.

Sounds kinda cheesy and cheap, but it's not. Looks pretty good actually.

I just couldn't see spending the money for something I could build myself for practically nothing in about an hour.

Panavise makes a bracket for holding things already. It fits on the right side though.

MrV...so you removed both of the downtube screws...do you remember the length and type of the screws you used to replace them with?

thanks

oh, I looked at the bracket on NEWMINISTUFF...thanks, but I want to try to make this simple thing myself

I got the MP3 player mounting kit from MyMiniParts for my Toshiba Gigabeat M40. I got the wide heavy duty velcro for the attachment to the bracket. It works great. The player is within finger tip access from my shift **** too.

I just finished making the bracket out of a piece of aluminum that was pliable so I was able to bend it to fit flush against the down tube which has a curved surface. "Industrial strength" velco keeps the bracket securely attached to the down tube, and also I put some velcro on the back of the ipod, so I can take it off the parcel shelf and stick it onto the bracket, then when I leave the car, I can easily remove it and put the ipodback back on the parcel shelf out of sight......no screws were needed.

the plate on the one I made is against the upper left side of the left down tube and a little recessed, not on the front of the down tube.....the plate placed where I put it is less obtrusive but the ipod is not as viewable though, but that was my preference

Your bracket looks good! I'd be careful with the velco idea as it could fall off and get in the way of your pedals. Other than that, you have a nice looking idea.
