limp button on tiptronic shifter

My tiptronic automatic transmission has a shift lever with release button that feels too loose. Is there a spring or anything in there that might be broken or worn out? In some shift positions the button doesn't spring back out like I think it should.

I found info on how to pull it off online. Not sure if I can fix this one or need to buy a new one, or if it's something down below the center console?

I have a feeling the shifter button rod that goes down inside the car isn't being pulled back down. When I depress the button on the shifter, there isn't anything pulling the button back out, unless I use my finger to pull it back out.

I pulled the shifter off of the shaft. Should the button have a spring or something inside it that forces it back out when pressing on it? Right now, there's no resistance.
