Speedometer
Why in some mini coopers the speedometer was in center and not in some?

Welcome to the forum
and I could only guess that the engineers/designers decided the public wanted a change .. as they always believe they know what the public really wants. |
It was placed in the center so that the co-pilot could see it for the purpose of winning the Monte Carlo rally 4 times in a row, '64 - '67...and the British are big on tradition. The Germans not quite so apparently.

The original Mini was designed and built long before people began racing it. They put the speedometer in the center so they could use the same design for LHD and RHD markets. The export market was important for the company and as a low end economy car, cutting cost really matters.
