Built in Navigation Not Working

Hi,

So my '05 Mini Cooper S' built navigation has been playing up lately (losing signals, etc.) and is currently not working at all. It shows a map, but the location displayed is a town New Jersey (where I went recently) and I'm an hour away from there in NYC. Seems like it could be that the GPS signal is not being received correctly or the DVD is not reading correctly, or both. Tried looking for the DVD unit under my seat and the passenger seat, but can't find it (my Mini has heated seats, don't know if this makes a diff). Looked in the trunk, too and can't find it there either. Didn't check the glove box, but I don't think it's in there. Anybody got any ideas for a) fixing my nav woes and b) finding the DVD unit itself?

Mark.

The DVD unit should be under the passenger seat and might be hidden by the rear floor mat. The disc gets inserted from behind the seat. However, unlikely there is anything you can do to it if it's broken. The dealer can't even do anything with it except to replace it if it is bad.

I have had a similar issue with mine a couple years ago. It was tracking my car somewhere out in the Chesapeake Bay. It eventually started to track the car where it was actually located.

Is it tracking your car (in the wrong location) , or does it appear to be locked in place?

Thanks for the tip. Have to double check whether it's tracking or not. I had this issue once before and I think it was tracking albeit miles from where I actually was.

Will take another look under the passenger seats and check under the floor mat, etc.

If it's displaying a map, then the DVD mechanism is working and able to read the disc. It must be some problem with tracking.

I'm not sure if this will help, but you can look at the Nav diagnostic screen. Open the Settings menu, then press and hold the Menu button for 10 seconds. The diagnostic screens display Nav information including the number of satellites detected and signal strength. If it's not picking up good signal, it would be a clue about the problem but I don't know what you would do about it.

You could also see if it helps to reset the Nav computer by disconnecting the power. I believe the Nav computer is on fuses F10 and F22, or you can disconnect the car battery for a while.

you may also want to check your software version and get it updated if it is not the most current, also try having the DVD cleaned at a gamestop or place like that. They did mine and it fixed a bunch of issues i was having.

Just to clarify, do you mean the DVD drive and not the disc?

SET>MENU(hold)>GPS Status.

3 satellites for a 2D fix
5 sats for a 3D fix
Max of 12, 8 tracking.
SNR 12-20dB on the 5 is a booming signal.

My 2012 Roadster started showing a GPS location that was incorrect and the compass would be wrong so the map started in the right place, sometimes, and them would go the wrong way when driving.
Dealer looked at it and quoted several thousand dollars to replace the head unit. I decided to live with it. Several months later, it just started working again. No idea what happened. Car is 9 years old now and working perfectly.

I would assume it was a bad connector somewhere (Compass, GPS, ???) that caused the issue but the dealer couldn't diagnose the specific issue. I would trace the wires and connectors for the head-unit, GPS and compass to see if resetting the connectors fixes it. Again, I did nothing and after 10 months or so, it fixed itself.
