Radio display issues
I am looking at buying a 2007 R56 and the radio display is not fully illuminated. I have tried pressing buttons, turning ***** and nothing works to make any sounds.
I have searched all over this forum and read everything I can do to remove and replace the radio but is there any fix for a faded out or messed up display?
THANKS!!

I was going to buy a new/used stereo but I was afraid I would inherit someone else's issue. So, I found this on ebay. For $169, they replaced the LCD on my stereo unit, fixed all the sticky buttons and then mailed it back to me. It took about 2 weeks to fedex the stereo to California, repair it, then mail it back to me in Florida. I pulled my stereo out of the dash (took about 30 minutes) and then reinstalled it in about 30 minutes. I watched the following youtube video for instructions on how to remove the stereo.

The only challenge to the process is the stereo unit lost its memory and forgot my car has Bluetooth. I understand I need to hook up the GT1 programming software to the car to tell the stereo I have Bluetooth.
Overall, I'm extremely happy with the repair. The stereo looks and operates like new.

I am so happy I found this thread! I just bought a used 2009 Mini Clubman and my stereo is doing the same thing. It fades where some days it works and other days I can barely see it and chunks of the screen are unreadable. I'll give these guys in Long Beach a call, as they are real close to me, and hopefully they can help me fix the problem.
So glad you found them and are happy with their repair work! Can you post how you fix your bluetooth issue? I'm likely to have the same problem once the stereo is put back together. Much appreciated!!

I have not done the following programming yet because I have not found anyone in my area with the tool. However, below are the instructions for reprogramming the stereo unit.
"In some situations, once the device is disconnected, Bluetooth or other options will automatically reset causing the feature to be recoded back to the unit by BMW or an independent mechanic. It is a 10-15 minute service and requires a GT1 or Autologic programming tool. It loads the Bluetooth option back into the head unit."

The display wasn't designed to be replaceable, although it is possible if you have good technician skills to dissemble everything down to the circuit board level. Everything is assembled with screws and tabs and comes apart if you examine how the pieces fit together. However, the easier thing to do is replace the entire button/display module from a speedometer off eBay.
