Tweeters cracking...speaker or amp?

Hey all,

Please dont flame me, for my search-foo is weak!
From what I have found on here thou, the HK system sounds great, but doesnt hold up too well with amps dying and speakers giving up the ghost. So before I spend money on the wrong thing, can anyone help me work out whats gone?

I have an R53 2004 Cooper S. The other day I pulled into our local dairy (your 7/11) and my sounds were working perfectly. Came out, put key in ignition, radio came on (on a low level so didn't pop anything) and this crackling noise was coming from the speakers!!

Ive tracked it down to coming from both tweeters.
If I turn the sound level up, the crackling gets louder, and likewise when I turn the sound level down, it gets quieter until no sound is coming out of the speakers.
If I fade to the rear speakers, doesn't do it. But the rear speakers are very quiet.

Any advice please would be great.

Matt

MAtt,

I would think it odd to have BOTH tweeters go out at the same time. My guess would be the AMP.

I had the speaker start to crack , its usually the bottom woofer speak in the door is the first to go when , they pop and crack with the music.

For both sides to crackle it sound more like the HK amp has issues. The upper tweeter speaker near the handle actually have two speakers in one housing. Its a tweeter and a Mid range. Check out our pics.

You could try to unplug the amp under the seat and plug it back in as well as the checking both speaker terminals ,. I have seen the woofer speaker terminal corrode a little from moisture in the door. Just make sure you are hearing the top speaker and not the woofer speaker. Cover one then the other and listen.

#2 is the HK tweeter / Mid-range #1 is the front door woofer.

A bit off topic but i'm glad you have the door speakers!!! Those are getting hard to find especially at that kind of price.

If it's the door speaker then my money is on the passenger side one. They blow most often. My theory is it's the setting on the radio that puts more power to it when there is no passenger in the car. The DRIVER setting on the headunit.

Thanks guys, I will have a play around with the wires into the amp to see if that makes any difference.

But yea, its definitely both of the tweeters that the noise is coming from. Hoping its them and not the amp lol

ECS Tuning, do you ship to New Zealand?
:)

Sorry, I stand corrected. Had a listen today and its all 4 front speakers are crackling. The bottom door speaker is faintly crackling while the tweeters are crackling rather loudly!!

Guessing this would be the amp causing this??

Cracklings is usually a faulty connection. Since it's four speakers it's probably at the amp, but may not be the amp itself. Check the ground at the amp and check the connector for corrosion.

Hey ECS Tuning,

Sorry if this is a dumb question, but the new H&K amps your selling, I see the pic on your website has different serial numbers etc from mine.
(Pic of mine is attached) Are they the same? Or no?

Hello Salker , good question , yours is just an older part number 65126940205 which has super-ceded a couple times to the newest 65129146708. Same part just newer part #.

The big difference in these Gen1 R50 R52 R53 amps is there is an R50 code ( which is for R50 / R53 hardtop models ( MINI part # 65129146708) and the R52 Code for convertible ( MINI part # 65129146709 ).
