My sub enclosure/can I get matching carpet?
So I picked up my MINI two weeks ago from GregS. Some of you may remember his super awesome mega cool fiberglassrific enclosure.
he kept it so he could make copies :) Which is okay, because I needed at least two 10s, so I immediately got to work making my own. I thought about doing the same type of enclosure of Greg but just don't know how it would do with the weight of two 10s. Also, I wanted to be able to stack UP and fold down the seats and use that space. That meant a false floor! As you know, in the MCS, the battery is there, so you only have a total of about 5 inches to work with. I did the measurements, did some planning, came up with a box design that would be 1.1 cubic feet. I had my eyes on the Elemental Design SQ10 sub with a mounting depth of 3 inches and a recommended enclosure of .5 cubic feet. Eureeka! After displacement of subs accounted for, almost perfect! Anyways, made a mostly rectangular box with a couple of "curves" (several angle pieces), sealed the crap out of it, made a beauty panel. I haven't received my subs just yet (should be here monday) but I'd figure I'd post up pictures of what it looks like. Also, the charcoal carpet on the back of the seat. Is there a place where I can buy a little bit of that so the trim panel will match? I had some black carpet (you can see i did the main box in that) but it just looked worse than the gray that i did the trim panel in. CLIFFS: Made box. Where can i get matching carpet? Also, there's a slight gap there with the panel and lip on the plastic because i didnt press the piece in all the way. It's completely flush with that :) http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j1...Resolution.jpg http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j1...Resolution.jpg http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j1...Resolution.jpg |
Nice job ! I am a little concerned for the enclosure space....fill it with some polly and it will sound as if the enclosure is larger than it is. Please post some pic's when all done. Where are your amp's ? Very nicely done !!

Elemental designs recommends .5cubic for this particular sub. It's the ideal space since it's a shallow mount. :) check it out:

hey good tast in box biulding, i went with the pioneer shallow mount instead , and yoiu can find the same color carpet you just have to look around, mine isnt exact but its close enough you cant tell

Looks good Chris. Don't worry you wouldn't have been able to fit 10" subs in the same style enclosure, I tried, just not enough width up that far. And why is the outside of the car dirty!? You'd think you drove it cross country or somehting.

This is what it looks like: http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j1...Resolution.jpg http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j1...Resolution.jpg I need to find a grill that's really flat. the way these are designed, it doesn't thump out further than the sub's lip, really and i want to be able to put stuff in the trunk. |

Got the amp hooked up today and wow! These subs sound amazing. I am very impressed with the sounds. So if anyone is thinking of some subs, ED is amazing and these SQ10s are quite something!
|
Got the JL 500/1 in today and fit like a glove under the seat. Got done tuning it and WOW.
REALLY woke these subs up. I can see why people say so many great things about the slash series. And ED. These subs are only 4 inches tall, 8 pounds a piece, and thump ridiculously hard. I mean. Insanely. |
xsproutx,
Good looking install! I'm considering doing something similar with either 1 or 2 sq10s, or maybe 1 9kV2. I'm leaning more towards 1 for weight savings. I'm curious, does your rear suspension sag at all? Are you running stock speakers? Does the bass overpower them? |
Also, has anyone considered doing a down-fire sub install? I saw a box on eD's site made for a scion xB that gave me the idea...
http://www.edesignaudio.com/product_...roducts_id=464 That would make it easy to protect the subwoofer... |
As far as going with one for weight savings: don't bother. These SQ10s are something like 4 pounds a piece. Nothing :) And my suspension comes nowhere near sagging. The subs and box, together, probably weight 30 pounds. I was running stock speakers up until yesterday and the bass didnt overpower them unless i wanted them to. It's all about how you tune it. I just installed a pair of Zapco reference speakers and a jl 300/1 amp. I havent gotten much a chance to tune it but man. Nice combination. :)

Agreed i want to get some matching carpet
http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k1...nln/img304.jpg i hate the way mine looks well the carpet anyway... if any one has a contact on that pm me!!! |

Cool! So you've got 250 W RMS going to each driver, yes? How is the low-end? Do these hit 20 Hz? How flat is the frequency curve between 20 and 100 Hz, i.e. does the bass roll off at any frequency? Have you taken SPL measurements? Feel free to answer any of none of these questions . |

I do have 250 W RMS to each speaker. As for the low end, it's VERY nice. I can't tell you for sure what they hit because I haven't actually taken any equipment to it to take the measurements. But I've been around and tested plenty of systems and I'd say that these hit 20hz. I haven't noticed any rolloff at all. They seem to be very consistant at all frequencys and I am extremely impressed by the quality. They also hit QUITE hard. I've had plenty of very nice speakers in my day and while I've definately had better performing, they were typically 5 times the price. |
Nice installs. This is exactly what I'm doing. You guys handed me the missing pieces to the puzzle! THANKS.

I don't mean to revive an old thread but figured it would be better than starting a new one to ask the same question.
Where can I get the matching carpet?? |
