Nuvi 650 GPS and Radar Detector 2'fer
Prior to today I have been running with a Nuvi 650 suction cupped to the window to the left of the steering column and a Passport radar detector suction cupped immediately to the right of the rear view mirror at the top edge of the window.
No problem, except for the tangle of 12V power cords, an irritation magnified by the use of an iPod wired to the Aux in of the radio and it's cord.
Solution: Today I followed the instructions on this site to mount your radar detector and pull power from under the roof console, but I also powered my Nuvi from the same source. Cool! I ditched the Nuvi suction cup mount and fabricated a brass "L" mount that is attached to the leading edge of the sunroof lip. Cool! Like they mention in the Radar Detector thread, the units power up when you open the car, a fact that I originally thought occured when you use the remote to unlock the car, but I just found out that it occurs any time you open the car. Not sure if that's going to be a hassle, but there is always the "manual" off option as well as the possibilty to hook into another wire for the hot.

The sig-photo below shows the radar detector and cord. Tonight I will take it for a test run and enjoy "no cords."

There's not much to see, that's the best thing about this setup. The only clue that there is something going on is the suction cups in the window in front of the radar detector. With the GPS mounted so high it is just about invisible unless you bend over and look up! The Nuvi just floats near the roofline. The antenna, when up just barely has a view of the roof through the glass. I will shoot some pictures later, but I am beat tonight.

As promised, here is a photo of the installation. Complete with self-portrait. Notice... No cords dangling from roof to floor. What a difference. Also, the Nuvi is all but invisible unless a short robber bends over and looks up. I think most bad guys are looking for packages or other goodies low to the ground. Hope so!
