Can't remove large speedo gauge trim!
I am in the middle of installing a new stereo in my girlfriends Mini and have managed to get the head unit almost out, but it seems to be attached to the large speedo/fuel/audio control gauge in the center of the car. I almost have the gauge out but I can't get the stupid trim piece off! there are two screws one on each side of the air vents and then there is something holding down the trim piece right where the hazard button is. Is there a screw under there? If so how the heck do you get at it!!!! If not is it just a clip?!?!? Finally, is there an "easy" way to get at the back of the HU or is pulling it out really the only way?
Thanks for all of the advice! |

I have a 2007 hard top with the non upgraded stereo. Does the vent pop out? I tried to pop it out but it was resisting quite a bit and I didn't want to break it.

These diagrams might help:

I checked those drawings before and it doesn't show the top vent coming out. I think it does, but the last thing I want to do is break it.

Dude, it comes out. People have had it out. Search for it, and you'll find it - usually associated with the Chromeline install.
Worst case, you buy a new one. It's a piece of plastic trim. I doubt it runs more than $50. Also, you have to remember that all of this stuff is designed to be removed for repair. It should pop right out. Use a screwdriver wrapped in a mf cloth, and try to pry it up... |
look at the Kuda mount install instructions thread - there are 2 small pieces of plastic trim that fit into the part of the vent that is closest to you. they just pop out easily with some help from a screwdriver.
please share with us the pictures of your stereo install and how to do it - I've been dreaming about this since I've seen first the ugly contraption of the OEM stereo buttons on the speedo :-) |
