I can't GIVE my 2002 MCS away!!
I've had my 2002 Chili Red MCS for sale for awhile, in all sorts of local publications (I'm in N. Kentucky), and havent even so much as had one call!! It has 15k, and about $6K in upgrades, and is still under warranty! I would go to ebay, but nobody seems to be getting what they want on there either. I guess $19k is too much for a car that would destroy ANYTHING in the twisties. Go figure.

Sell the aftermarket stuff seperatly and return the car back to stock (as much as you can). People want stock cars, not modded. Most people think a modded car has been beat to death (which might be true or false).
Now, what parts do you have? -Cody |
Im not turning another wrench on this thing, and the way I see it, with it being under warranty, who gives a **** if it was beat, get every little noise, squeak and rattle fixed at the dealership. Live at the BMW store. Before the car was even touched, I met with the service manager to make sure the warranty was still going to valid, with the mods I was planning on doing. And I would LOVE to buy a car with $6k in mods that was still covered, because you get all the **** for free. Im asking less than book on the car.

Fine and good...
but the marketplace doesn't seem to share you're opinions. But I'd have to say that you can GIVE your car away. If you're really interested, I'll take it!

Take a look a those who might be interested and you will probably find two sets of people. Those who want to mod it themselves and those who don't want anymods. Best of luck. I hope you sell for your price |
I've been autocrossing for almost 20 years now and it's EXTREMLY RARE for someone to sell their car fully prepped (shocks, springs, sway bars, wheels, tires, etc..) Most everyone saves all their stock stuff and converts the car back to stock when they are ready to sell it.
Sorry....but that's the way it is. Even if it doesn't make sense. BTW, I was lucky enough to buy our '99 Miata 10AE fully prepped for autocross. We saved a ton of money compared to buying all the upgrades ourselves. But I think I'm a rare occurance. |
The market in Greater Cincinnati (SW Ohio, SE Indiana, N Kentucky) has always been "cooler" than the super heated markets on the East and West coasts. Let's be honest, you have a four, now nearly five year old (model year) vehicle, and you are looking for a price only a few thousand dollars shy of a new car?!!! (Remember that the local dealership has sold at MSRP since day one, you can't compete with that, period.) My advise is to wake up and smell the coffee.
1) Set a realistic price for a five year old vehicle. 2) Realize that mods are money down the rat hole. Not only will nobody pay for them, the majority of people won't even want them on their car. 3) Join up with the local MINI club, for folks who a) like modded vehicles and b) might know of someone in the market for a first year MCS. 4) Consider keeping the MCS and giving it proper use. With gas at $3+, you should take advantage of the gas mileage that this performance car provides. |
Not true. Ive had 32 cars withabout half of those being modded (not including PWC,s and bikes) and have had zero problems unloading anything within the first month. Blown 'stangs, my most recent was an '05 for $35k, Engine swap VW's, lifted 4wds, COUNTLESS more stangs, and not one of them stock. It seems that the redneck boys always have $15k laying around for a Mustang or a truck, but you have to beg people to buy a '97 M3, or a '93 VR6 Corrado, or a '99 ML 320. The rule of "modded cars dont sell" only applies to the Eurotrash sect apparently. Ill end up trading this in for 17.5k, and the lot tech at the dealership will have a blast beating the piss out of the car. Cars are a sickness, which is what I have, and I dont mind losing some $ just because I get bored and want to move on. You gotta pay to play.

your previous posting on nam
"I bought my 2002 S model with 13k on it for 15k from a private owner. Save your cheese and buy an S, youl be dissapointed with the NA model."
seems to suggest it was ok for you to get a great deal on this very car, but now the world sucks cause you cannot recover the cost of your mods. pull the mods off, get 75% of themoney back for them, sell the car PROBABLY FOR MORE THAN THE 15K YOU CLAIM TO HAVE PAID FOR IT, and move on-or sell the car for the 17.5 trade in you may have been offered and move on. The price/valuemarket is speaking-but-I do not see your car for sale on NAM, easily the most read MINI forum out there, with the most people looking for a car checking in here. perhaps i missed it. |

now we are gettin somewhere-
sorry to put words in your mouth-you did not say the world sucks, my stupid interjection on your part. now then-
as it happens, I have a friend looking for red, not sure he is ready to buy as yet-but-now that we all know what the complete list of mods is, can you post some pics? also what factory packages? premium (sunroof, etc)? covenience? (cruise ctrl, etc)? does it have leather or cloth? what color interior? or could you send pics privately? which konis? which springs? and dont yank the other stuff off yet-the 19k might be a little high, might not be-I think you will do better on a national forum like this one and some of the other MINI only forums than the normal run of the mill autotrader type stuff. give it a completelist of the factory options and inside color/surface treatments on here, lots and lots of people get referred here when looking to buy. and a pic IS worth a thousand words on these cars!! |

and...
after re-reading your list of mods, your price may not be high at all-but-this is the holiday/vacation time of year and the right guy (you know the guy, after you give it away, who says he missed the ad and has been looking for this exact car for months and would have been happy to buy it at 19k). I really think a little more patience and an accurate, complete listing on here and the MINI2 and a few other forums you can find through here, would get you the exposure you need for this exact car. my friend is out of town until tomorrow or thurs, not sure if he will be interested or not, but you've got a pretty nice car from reading the above and I think you just need different exposure-the general car buying world on auto trader, etc doesnt know a thing nor cares a thing about an m7 under strut system-or the other mods you have done. on the MINI specific forums, people do. stick with it a little longer-that boat will still be for sale next week.:) :)

"Stangs" and trucks are not Minis...... many to most people that buy Minis are looking for a humble little cute car that speaks to manners and spunky good taste with a touch of fun...... few people know the capablities in the twisties...... trucks and "Stangs" come with and are expected to have "attitude" ..... you are knocking most of the market out with a modded Mini.... my suggesion is put it back to stock and sell your parts to net the most $s

How much do you want for the Springs, Short Shifter, Catch can, and IC divertor? And what brand's are they?
-Cody  It might be a little bit of work on your part to pull some of the old stuff off, but there is ALWAYS a market for used parts. |

If you're giving it away, I'll take it (for a free MINI I'll find a place to keep it).
It sounds like even though it may take some time and work, you may be better off removing the mods and seeling them individally and selling the MINI in closer if not completely stock form; lots of people who buy used cars are looking to keep them much longer than the warranty period and do care how its been driven and mods send up red flags to consumsers, wether or not it happened thats the way it is; you may find that by seperating the mods you also walk away with more cash. Just something to consider, good luck with the sale. |
Car sales suck everywhere right now. Most of the time you will be lucky to get the money back you have spent on mods. I sold a 2002 MCS last Aug. with 42K miles for 17K. It was pretty much a base car. I kept my mods and used them on my new car.

As you yourself pointed out, selling a modified MCS isn't anything like selling a modified Mustang. This isn't a redneck ride, AutoTrader and a few ads in the Enquirer aren't gonna help. The MINI market is very different, as you are new to it (having picked up your MCS only a couple of months ago) you really should heed our advise. First and foremost, you aren't going to turn a profit, or even recover your aftermarket parts costs. It's money down the drain. I would agree with you that converting back to stock might not be worth it to you, so you should redouble your efforts to find a potential buyer for a modded MCS. Suggestions besides getting involved with CincyMINIs (the local MINI club) would include going to local SCCA and Miata/Austin-Healey Club autocrosses with a for sale sign and a list of mods on your windshield. But most importantly, this isn't a seller's market as it may have been on the coasts several years ago. If you have a dealer willing to give you 17 and change you should go for it. An unsophisticated buyer may be your best choice for a rapid sale.

I'm lookin at it this way. You're asking 19k, the dealer is offering ya 17.5k. Thanks a difference of $1500. If you trade it in, you'll save about $1225. on taxes (that's using 7%). So your only out $275. from what you were asking. So I say trade it in and go for what ya want.

Any info back on the mods?
My MINI needs some parts! -Cody |
