Hey everyone. I know there is a few treads on this already and i have read them all. But i want answers from people who live in our area. Like everone i do tons of driving in really windy roads (Gunnison and crested butte area) What kind of snow tire set up do you use for the winter. I have 17's on my coop. Just wondering. Thanks

I use 15" Blizzaks. Good on snow and ice but do not came anywhere near my S03s on dry roads.
Yes, Brian is a good driver, and when he gets his new tires and wheels on his car he'll be even better. But don't tell him that he is hard enough to work with as it is. Felix

I can tell you this much- the stock high performance ware terrible- i.e. I couldn't get past Morrison road on Wbound I-70 or out of my SHOVELLED driveway during last week's 2 snows even with DSC.
I'm also interested in hearing about positive snow tire experiences. I didn't think a fwd car could be this bad.

Snow tires
I had a set of really economical Hankook snow tires put on last week by Discount Tire for about $60 a piece (not including the wheels). The difference the snow tires made this morning driving in snow and slush was incredible. I will never drive my Goodyear RFs in the winter any more.
I believe you don't need to get expensive tires, these low price ones work just fine. Plus the tire shop will mount and balance the tires free twice a year.

The best snow tires money can buy are Nokian Hakkapellita 2's with studs. The Finns know a thing or two about developing a tire that can handle ice and snow. The Hakka's are overkill for a Mini on the front range, which sees more sun than snow.
If you live in the mountains though.
A cheaper alternative to the Hakka's would be the Hankook tires with studs. not nearly as expensive, and only slightly less performance.
Make sure you are running similar tires on all 4 wheels, don't try to save money by only putting snows on the front axle.
