Depending on your mileage, you may want to check your VIN with a local MINI dealer for possible recall replacement. (I'm doing that myself today)

Thanks for the info but mine is already 15 yrs old so it can't be covered by warranty...

Recalls are different than a warranty, this recall affects 02-05.. worth looking into.

Going to get my done soon. Called BMW an they have to certify my car since it was owned in Germany by some one in the military. Then they will cover under warranty.
I have a 04 R50. 84k
