I used to have a darkroom with mostly Agfa equipment, but that was sold more than a decade ago.

And I agree with Lorne_K2 - equipment is no substitute for talent. But my Canons have been very robust over the decades. They all still work (except for the 50mm F1.4 lens) and have taken some pounding over the years (decades....The FTb was bought in 1979).

It's not the amount of equipment - it's how you use it! Some of the best photography I've seen is from students with low budgets.

I'm usually a bit of an equipment snob, but on a whim had picked up a Tamron 28-300 XRi zoom lens at the used counter of my local camera shop. It was a $150 gamble which I could just Ebay off if I didn't like it. I think it's worth every penny and more.

Wow, there are some nice kits listed here (aware of the truism that it's all about the image, not the camera!) However, if it weren't a little about the equipment few of us would be Mini owners as there are many ways to get from A to B and few of them require a Mini. A car is not a car, and a camera is not a camera, in that deeply philosophical sense. The final product does depend on the tool (as a woodworker I can swear on it), but it also depends on the skill and craft of the tool-wielder. There have been many beautiful images shown here on NAM and many were made with non-Canon cameras, yes.
For me, I've always been a "Canon guy" and I just enjoy using them, I'm familiar with the UI, and love the glass.
I went on a rampage over the last 6 months and built a markIII/L kit. It's amazing to use, and I'm always working on the skill, craft and vision thing.

Just got a Canon Rebel Xsi with its 18-55mm IS lens. New to this kind of camera, a definite step up from my Panasonic Point and Shoot.

You won't regret it. I have the xti, and I love it! I never feel totally comfortable unless it's within my arms' reach:nod:

And not just in taking pictures either, but editing, deleting and cropping photos as well. I've also read a couple books on photography such as "The Digital Photography Book" by Scott Kelby vol. 1 and vol. 2. Both great for people who are starters and even for the more advanced.

Photography is officially one of my hobbies. :grin:

FYI, if anyone's interested in the Canon battery grip accessory--GET IT! It adds needed weight to the camera, and holds AA batteries or two of the rechargeables that normally fit the camera. I use the latter option, and have gone for a week of daily shooting on vacation with the same two batteries on one charge!

For those of you with crop (1.6x) Canon cameras, the new EF 55-250 is getting rave reviews, and a friend has one on his 40D--and really liking the results. It's well priced too. Makes a great companion to the 18-55 IS.

Say, not to divert this thread (can we talk about stuff, or is it just intros?), but how do you like the 18-55 IS? I'm looking for a wide zoom, and currently considering the 17-40L. The 18-55 IS does have some advantages in low light though, wonder how it compares to the EFS lens. Another one I was thinking about was the 17-85 IS.

The 17-40L is a full-frame lens, whereas the EFS lenses are specifically designed for 1.6x crop cameras (they barely work on the 1.3x pro cameras, and some don't.) Hence I don't see them as comparable: there may be a few EFS lenses that get good/great reviews, but generally they are not in the same league as the L lenses, especially by price! If you plan on upgrading to a FF body at some time, then the 17-40 is a worthy investment, as is the 16-35L--it has the highest IQ of all the wide zooms I use.
