MidOhioMotoring.com - The new site is up & running!

I'm happy to report that as promised a couple of weeks ago, and with the input from this forum, http://www.MidOhioMotoring.com with its new look and feel, is up and running.

Thanks to Aaron and you the members, this was a fairly painless process. However, this morning I was a bit disappointed to find that we were still defaulting to the original site, on review I found that some of our DNS settings were still pointing to the old host, I made the appropriate changes and now it seems that we are good to go, the new site appears when you enter our URL. If it doesn't for you, clear your browsers temporary files and try it again.

A few notes about the new site... it is a bit light in the terms of content. My hope is that as we move through the year(s) that members will provide pictures and articles that will better tell the story of the MID-OHIO Motoring Club. As that happens I think we can, for instance, start replacing the large images on our front page with actual, meaningful content.

Along the same lines... I've taken the liberty to compose the information on the "About Us Page" some of this information was copied from the original site's pages [Thanks Aaron], particularly the Disclaimer, which I think is important for our visitors to read and understand. If anyone feels compelled to change, rewrite or add to this page please feel free to do so... I'm particularly interested in the Club's history and have already asked Aaron if he would write that for us... I see that as a link from this page and hope that he will include some pictures etc.

On the front page you'll see some changes... I've changed the wording on the top bar... it now includes Columbus, Ohio, I've added some meta data to the page's source to help search engine spiders to better classify our information. I've added a RSS feed that will provide some constantly updated RSS MINI news. Also I've added a big Red Clubman with our logo on the door... just for fun.

Our "Events Page" now has a real Calendar... at this point it's not well populated but I wanted to be sure everyone likes this widget before I got too crazy with it... How it works... if you mouse-over the blue dates, that event's title drops down from the top of the calendar, click on the date and the details slid out from the side, I can put URL's in here for maps, pictures etc. The typing header is now gone and replaced with a welcome message and some basic instructions on how to use the calendar.

For the "Links Page" I retrieved the links from the original site.. I have not ran them through my links checker yet... so some may be dead... I'll do that over the next few days. I think it would be helpful to put Big Event links on here... like to National Events like the Dragon.

Emails... this account can have 100 - 10 meg accounts I set one up for myself Terry@MidOhioMotoring.com but have yet to get it working... I'm still working on this problem... I'm sure it has something to do with the previous mentioned DNS issues.

For now that's about it... check it out and let me know what you all think.
Thanks,
Terry

I'm interested to see how the calendar works but no blue dates are showing. Should there be one for this Saturday?

Yep everything looks fine and runs correctly. Safari is extremely standards-compliant so barring any coding anomalies, pages will render correctly.

Cool I'll try it out... this is why I'm doing this site... you get out of the loop for awhile and you miss out on some of these things... when I started all you had to worry about was Netscape Browsers and steam powered PCs.

OH, I just added a little Star Trek zippy door sound to the details window that slides in on the Calendar... I knew Dan would miss all the noise on this page so...

On safari to the new site...... =)

I have no stripes & don't go to the strip, where does this leave me?

My dad had a Pontiac Safari jw34. Did you buy one instead of a Clubman?

Very nice work Terry. I'm proud of you old timer.

Hey if the Clubman had those little windows on top like the Pontiac, then we'd be talking.

Site weirdness:

In IE (6.0.2900): Clicking your northamericanmotoring link opens a pop-up the size of the main page graphic - I need to maximize the window to see any of the menus.

Also, clicking on the "Events" link in the menu opens a new window with the calendar in it, however none of the boxes populate, and after a few seconds the window closes itself.

The calendar DOES populate correctly in Firefox, however, and does so in the same browser tab as I'd opened for the main MoM site. Weird.

Re: March 15th: Can you add in the Dublin St. paddy's Day parade to that date? Meeting place is 08:30 at Bob Evans in Dublin (across from MAG) with final assembly at Metro Center in Dublin (just off 161 and 270) at 10:00. Baloons and Shamrock decorations will be provided - be sure to wear green!

Last - can we elininate the scrolling Clubman graphic across the main page? it's very distracting (IMHO). Also channging "Events" to "Event Calandar" may clue new users into the fact that it's acually a CALENDAR and not a page of text...
