New and with an 06 JCW

Hi, i am new to mini coopers and found myself to be the proud owner of an 06 factory install JCW. I am loving the car, but it seems a bit slower than another one I test drove recently. The throttle response seems slower.

Any ideas on how to recalibrate the throttle? I recently did the "viagra for MINIs" ECU reset and didn't find much of a difference...

I am worried about a potential leak, but the top end was just rebuilt so everything should be pretty tight. They also did motor mounts, water pump, timing chain, spark plugs, etc (~5K worth of work).

My hope is I just need to log some miles and the response will improve.

Thanks in advance!

Thanks! Its been a blast to drive. I find myself at work now wanting to leave and head north or south on the PCH.

Congrats and Welcome!

No recalibration that I am aware of with a high-tech computer but there is this... https://www.sprintboosterusa.com/c-65-mt.aspx

I have one and it really remaps the throttle quite dramatically. It takes out that feeling of there being a lack of responsiveness in the pedal.

Welcome. Yes the throttle in the MINI has a built in delay. We have two good options to help with that.
1. the sprint booster, this module plugs into the pedal and moves the throttle faster than you push it improving the response.

2 ECU tune, send us your ECU and we can adjust the throttle maps to make it more responsive, among other changes to increase power and smoothness.

Would an 06 JCW benefit from this tune or module?

Welcome to the MINIacs!

I would recommend... well, I am recommending have your ECU checked to make sure the JCW Code was installed.

A good service Tech can insure ALL the proper JCW parts are present and the Code update was done to the ECU, for the package.

Oh yea! post some pics...

Take the car to a good, independent MINI shop and have them check the car over with a fine toothed comb. Have them smoke the motor to check for small air leaks. Depending on where you live in Cali, there are a number of good shops out there.

Welcome to NAM and congrats on the purchase.

Not sure about the power. If you're worried about a leak, might smoke test it and see if you can find the culprit. Hope you figure it out and let us know if you need any assistance. oh! and post some pictures if you can.

Yes both will improve throttle response. But the tune will do even more as fuel, timing, and torque maps are adjusted.

I need to look into doing this tune. Just traded my DINAN R53 for the JCW R52 and, although I think the JCW has more linear power from lower speeds, it seems to lack that quick throttle response I was used to . Also disappointed that the JCW gets worse MPG than the DINAN. Would the tune do anything to improve that at all? What about high end "grunt?" The DINAN I could hit the gas going 80 and it would take off like a rocket. The JCW not so much. And the DINAN I did not have the smaller pulley...just the Stage 4 software and the other goodies like throttle body and exhaust so I think the tune was the key player there.

It's surprising how much you liked the Dinan as there were some big issues we found in the Dinan tunes that simple adjustments would fix.
The JCW prob doesn't feel as fast due to it being much smoother and having the pulley which gave you more boost to start with. Either way we can make improvements on each while still maintaining reliability and gaining power with throttle response.

I have a noticeable difference in my JCWs, my 2007 R52 JCW is a bit quicker and more responsive than my 2004 R53 JCW, it has better pop and gurgle as well. But I have been just writing it off to the fact that the R53 has 145K miles and the R52 only has 60K miles.

I had even started thinking about taking my ECM code from the '07 and loading it on the '04 but I don't know if that would cause other issues. And I have been mulling over the idea of having Helix put it on their Dyno and tweaking it.

Bottom Line... +1 on smoke test, a great way to check for vacuum/boost leaks.

Motor on!

A transmission gear ratio change was made effective with July 2004 builds that provided better acceleration.
